Here are a few thoughts from the game.

  1. First of all, I hate to lead off with some bitches, but here goes. They never introduced our players. In fact, unless I just didn’t hear it, they didn’t say Bliss’s name for the shootout (wasn’t til he made a basket in the game that I realized it wasn’t Sharma in the shootout). Anyway, most of you guys seemed to have memorized the face/name thing better than me.
  2. Second bitch. I have been to JPJ many, many times. That was the loudest announcing/music that I have experienced. It was so loud, I wondered if it could be harmful. The music would have been fine if a few decibels lower.
  3. Non-bitch things. I really liked Bliss (especially when I realized he was selected for the shootout). He seemed in control/command while he was in there. Saw him make a few aggressive moves with the ball. I’ll bet Tony likes him (A lot) at either the 1 or 2.
  4. Of course, Saunders was the most impressive with Sharma and Cofie showing well also. Power picked it up the third game.
  5. Thought they all looked like they were playing hard defense. Of course, knowing their opposition intimately game the defense a bit of an edge.
  6. Rohde played a good floor game (uh-oh). Made some really nice passes.
  7. Didn’t see anything about BB or ARob to suggest our inside game problem was solved. Maybe Saunders helps, but he really does want to shoot the three.
  8. Dai Dai’s shooting was as advertised (not very good). He is quick but too aggressive for his own good (or ours).
  9. All in all I think we have some nice pieces. I hope Tony will use them more than in past years.

Yeah, this was a disappointment for me. It’s only one scrimmage; it’s early; etc (all the caveats). But the misses were like, not even in the area code. And didn’t look comfortable.

Last thing I will note, for now, is that we seemed to be incorporating an elbow or mid-post a bit more intentionally, into a few sets. I think I saw it with Saunders, TJP, and Warley once or twice.

Celtics shot 61 threes Friday in the first preseason game

Dusting off the Sam Hauser playbook (which is I think the most realistic way TJP becomes a moderate-to-high usage guy).

Obv limited sample size but Power appears quicker than Hauser.

I don’t disagree with this take, but I don’t agree that it necessarily means

Imac is a 3P sniper - if CTB wants to run a lineup with two initiators, then Imac most likely slides down the the 3-spot like we saw with the Reece/Kihei pairing. From the small sample that I’ve seen thus far, Bliss is viewed as an initiator and if CTB wants to run a Warley + Dai Dai pairing, my guess is that Bliss is on the bench rather than sliding down like you’d see with Imac.

Re bitch #2, I have to wear hearing protection in JPJ because of the scoreboard. I found that I can hear people around me better with the earplugs. But even worse now are the baseball games where they play 8 second snippets of screaming loud, deafening music between every pitch. I was thinking about getting season tickets for baseball but I won’t until they discontinue that.

Came here to say this after finally watching the stream. He’s way more fluid than Groves and looked natural at the wing. Can’t help but love the height and size in the Warley, McKneely, power, Saunders, Buchanan lineup

We don’t disagree much. I was referring mainly to ā€œreplacement minutesā€ and this season only . I see Bliss competing more with Rohde and Sharma for minutes than I see him competing with Warley/Ames. There are so many different lineups that we can put on the floor, especially since it appears that Bliss is a good shooter. Our guards can each play at least 2 positions. I see Bliss giving IMac his first rest and we don’t lose much firepower with that substitution, but then can see him stay on the floor when IMac re-enters and slides down to the 3. But then we need to consider the defensive side of things. I’m not convinced yet that Bliss can cover most of the ACC point guards or those from Tennessee, Florida, Memphis, and maybe Baylor.

Yeah, hate to be the old ā€œget off my lawnā€ guy but HATED the loud music playing during gameplay. Obviously fine during intros, timeouts, between games but not while playing.

Last year the audio was so terrible you couldn’t hear anything. Seems like they’ve now over corrected.

If they want to focus on things that kids** like, how about streaming video?

** 47 year old kids, to be precise

Back on hoops - on @Jerome ’s point: I think there’s sort of a TJP v Rohde v Taine dynamic. TJP the best shooter / offense in general, Rohde the best defender and distributor, Taine with the most experience.

I don’t know that I agree here. Bliss has the benefit of a year in our system over Ames and is the better shooter / more careful with the ball which TB values. I could see him ahead of Dai Dai in the pecking order.

Nevermind, I misread the premise of your post.

If Bliss commits to taking and making open 3s he will seperate himself in playing time. Dai Dai much faster etc so maybe more situationally. We shall see

No problem. Premises, points, and meanings get lost often when a back and forth goes more than a post or two.

Yeah, that all makes sense. To me, Warley is the clear starter, but who serves as his backup is still very much in the air between Dai Dai and Bliss. If I had to call it based on what I’ve seen so far, I’d give the nod to Bliss.

I think we’re better at guys 6-13 in the rotation than last year, but we are worse at guys 1-3. How much better and worse remains to be seen, but I think top end talent wins games more than bench depth.
