Well he started alot last year, and sometimes he needs some bad shots to get into a rhythm.
It’s no different then either Beekman or Morsell not shooting at all or missing layups. Atleast Tomas shooting at 40% is better than those above situations…
However defensively does he really give up that much? Does he give up 9 points ( 3 threes worth) per game?
Agreed, missing three plus weeks doesn’t bode well especially in this system but hopefully he can get back into shape and separate himself. We are going to need him vs tech, unc and FSU.
Game 16 Efficiency data vs. Pittsburgh: UVA as a team was 117.7 on offense and 106.5 on defense for a team net per 100 possessions of +11.2 . This is the baseline to determine who contributed the most above or below the team performance.
Most important stretch:
Pitt tied it up at 36-36 with 16:00 remaining. These substitution patterns are awful. Then Hauser got to the line and made 2 FT’s and then Huff hit two 3’s and Hauser hit two 3’s sandwiching a pair of FT’s by Woldetensae that gave the Hoos a 16 point lead they wouldn’t relinquish. Pitt got no closer than 7 the rest of the way.
Coach Bennett mentioned multiple times in the post game presser how poor the defense was and yet he continues to play his worst defender the most minutes. Hauser played great on offense and very well on defense. He allowed Champagnie 18 points on 18 FGA, 2 FTA and 2 turnovers. Really stellar work from Hauser. Woldetensae should be getting 15 minutes a game or more. Every game. Period. Period. Beekman continues to excel defensively and simply needs more minutes on offense at PG to accentuate his talents. He will struggle at 2 guard offensively.
Horton, Coulibaly, and Odukale were the most efficient players for Pitt. Once they figured out who to attack and how - they scored 39 points in the 2nd half. This has been a recurring theme all season.
Dave… who was the guy with the assist to Huff and Hauser on that 16-0 run..I believe it was Kihei…if you tell me that Reece is the guy that can make those plays too… then we need to bring Kihei off the bench or stop with playing the two PG combos… our most versatile defensive lineup is with Morsell at the two… our offense suffers though which is why I kinda agree that TW needs 10-15 minutes… here is the issue to that happening… if we get behind AND Huff, Hauser or Trey aren’t hitting well we need to get stops and TW ain’t the guy to have in the lineup in those situations…getting behind and waiting for Hauser and Huff to get going seems to happen enough to where we have these perplexing sub patterns…
I agree having Reece and Clark on the court for extended minutes harms success. Beekman is by far the better defender. So if Tony really believes what he says about defense than Beekman would play more than Clark.
By all data points Beekman is the 2nd best guard defender in the ACC. Clark is the worst defender on the team by all data facts.
But Kihei is the best *playmaker on the team. So between the 4 guards we have to mix and match. At this point however I would start Kihei and Tomas, because Tony is not going to usurp Kihei at all. Then Reece and Tomas are still a good threat because of Tomas’ offense. Casey is clearly 4th at this point.
Honestly I don’t think there is a good solution to the lineup. You gain/lose something with every option. Kihei and casey start you get D but not offense. Same with Reece and casey or Kihei and Reece. Woldo is the wild card. If he can be solid on defense and consistent on offense then you can create the flow and the scoring. But he’s not proven to be able to do that for long stretches.
The other issue i see is more teams are pressing the hoos even if it’s only token pressure. Reece Kihei offers an obvious solution but anything rlse gets dicey quickly. Hauser was rough handling the press yesterday and even Reece seemed a bit shaky
Noticed last year and this year too. When Tomas gets his feet right (left foot facing directly in the rim) his shot much more likely to go down. he has a tendence to aim the feet at an angle when he shoots and thats when he is less perfect.
