šŸ€ PORTAL SEASON (UVa Offseason) 2026

Can you show me a ā€œgreatā€ college guard who doesnt shoot 25% (that’s giving Gertrude a ton of leeway as he has shot 10%) from 3? If you can show me a good one, I would be surprised. It isnt a lazy take. Do you not remember Bub Evans and 4 on 5 offense? And he was excellent on defense, something Gertrude isnt.

What an idiot - do you know anything about basketball and getting into a rhythm?

I think there’s some truth to both sides here. I do think Eli would (probably) shoot a little better if given the chance to get into a rhythm. However, even when he has played substantial minutes in the past, he hasn’t shot well. In that UNC game you referenced, he did play 19 minutes and gave us good energy. He also shot 1-7 from the field, 0-2 from 3, and 4-8 from the FT line. He played 18 minutes against Syracuse and went 2-5, 0-1, and 2-2. He also went 2-5 and 0-1 against Memphis in 11 minutes. He also had 1 assist and 6 turnovers in those three games…

Again, I love having Eli on the team, and I sincerely hope he comes on strong and has a great season. That would legitimately get me amped up. I do think it’s fair to be skeptical though.

Most of his 3s weren’t even close to going in. Good shooters dont need to chuck up a couple ugly bricks every time they come off the bench before they can get close to making one.

I do hope that what weve seen from Eli so far in his college career has been a result of injuries and rust. He was a good shooter in high school so I think there’s reason for optimism.

Jalen Haralson.

Not a guard. He is what id call a ā€œcombo forwardā€. He can play the 3 or 4. You can get away with a bigger guy not being able to shoot. I guess we can mistake him for a guard because he is ball dominant but he’s a point forward out of necessity because Burton got hurt.

I know that players dont go from 10% to 33% in an offseason. His sample size may be small but where is there an indicator that it will go up significantly? And I moved him from 10 to 25%, that is a massive jump. He also shoots FTs at 61%. That is normally a good indicator that you can raise your 3pt shooting %. He can do sprints and get up all the shots he wants, itll take a minor miracle for Gertrude to shoot a poor 30% from 3 and this staff values shooting in spades.

What would your shooting expectations be for a player who has averaged 3.7 minutes per game in his 2 seasons and 0.4 three point attempts per game?
Only taking more than 2 three pointers in a game once - ever…
At the same time shooting 52% from 2 for his career and 64% last year.

Gertrude is a career 9/23 (39%) on two pointers not at the rim, 3/29 (10%) from three, 12/21 (57%) from the free throw line for context.

Small sample size of course

I can’t wait for the cranky/drunk/exhausted/sleep deprived/hormonal/low-T/feverish/constipated/ diarrhea/bad day at work/spousal stress/financial crisis/tummy ache fights between LRA posters that are going to happen this off-season. We have a long haul until we play a shitty opponent in November and it’s going to be awesome in the meantime….

Does the team go to Europe this summer, does anyone know?

Not the right guy to answer this but I don’t think so

No, Europe comes to the team this summer, we just don’t know who or when yet

I’d expect anyone to hit more than 10% of their 3s even on a small sample size and if not have a much higher than 57% FTs to indicate you can actually shoot the ball at an average rate. I suspect he can do better than 10% if he played regularly but he won’t be an average shooter and if you think so your eyes are deceiving you

lol - my eyes watched practice and warmups when he got real reps…. And high school tape - but keep going…
My best shooting games ever I almost always missed my first shot or 2 … in fact scored 48 after starting 1/4… but of course I don’t know what I’m talking about …. Proceed

You keep mentioning small sample size but continue to over interpret the percentage.

He’s taken 29 3 point shots. That’s a very small number. Do I think we have enough data to say that Eli probably isn’t an elite 3 point shooter? Yes. Do we have enough data to say he can’t be a decent 3 point shooter? Not even close. Do I think it’s silly to ignore his HS shooting percentage (larger sample size)? Yes.

Assume you are way younger than me. But man you would have loved my college analytics

Dave is exactly right. You cant judge a player on sporadic random minutes played. Unless of course it was Grant Kersey perfection

Bliss is interesting: the list of people who have recently followed him gives the idea that he’s being pursued by power 5 kids to be the bench pg and by a few mid majors to be their starting guard/the guy.

Seen Alabama NC State and Kentucky media and coaches on him. And a few mid Major head coaches like the head coach of Milwaukee.

Also seen a UConn fan that their fan base respects on twitter as an ā€œinsiderā€ hint that Bliss is a guard Dan Hurley is stealth mode recruiting as a bench guard (no idea if actually true or not).

I do recall Stanford Wake Forest and Creighton on him early and they all could probably give him a starting guard spot.

I’d very seriously take him as a bench guard

Don’t know how well he would translate from 40 minutes a game high usage and the ball in his hands whenever he wants to a smaller role.

Odom seems to like his 25-30 minute guys/productive and efficient in fewer minutes.

Of course I am a Bliss Truther so I would also love Bliss back.
