We excited? Where is he leaning? I see he is from Texas. A&M fav?
At the same time, I suspect that you can say that St Louis outperformed N C State last year, and their [N C Stateâs] portal haul was ranked ahead of ours, if I am not mistaken. Itâs not that the services get everything wrong. Itâs that they make enough mistakes to invalidate the overall picture theyâre trying to paint.
I also believe that recruiting the portal successfully is more dependent on how well a coach (or GM) networks with other coaches and GMs. I imagine the real gems are often found through referrals.
Just saw who I think is Jalen Shelly touring grounds.
Not sure I entirely agree with this. I agree that GMs perform an important role. I think GMs can help identify potential recruits and focus the search. They can handle most of the legwork. They can deal with negotiations.
But I donât think there are a lot of GMs who are as good at talent evaluation as the coaches, or have as good an instinct about how a player fits into their team. I think ultimately the problem is the system, not the personnel. Regardless of who is doing the evaluation, there are a lot of players and not a lot of time â either to evaluate the player or to make a decision â and thatâs going to be true whether itâs the coach or the assistant coaches or the GM or whomever.
There was a YouTube account last year that would post breakdowns and highlights of most notable portal guys. I remember watching Sam, Jacari, Malik, etc. but that doesnât seem to exist this year
Scraping through a lot of slop trying to find Shelley highlights⌠slow day at work
music for those videos got copyright strucken so he stopped doing them
I think the big value add of the GM is doing all of the backchanneling during the season and then getting that short list of guys together with all the necessary stuff for the coach to then make the decision and also handle the donor wrangling to say âhey we think to have a competitive roster next year weâre going to need $Xm for a 2, and $Xm for a backup centerâ and have that all lined up right away so the coach can focus on the scouting and actual recruitment (and not to mention coaching during the season).
Legwork like you say.
Someone on Sabre said multiple visitors today fwiw
Link?
I donât see anyone saying multiple, what is the username?
I believe Aldrich did all that. Or are you saying he didnât?
Or is it more likely that we did the legwork but kids and their agents are a frigging fickle bunch?
unless itâs on the subscriber board, but not sure if anyone posts there
Iâm speaking generally about the role of a GM and why we should have one! I have no idea what we did this year.
I assume all of our assistants did a little bit of this work during the season, and they probably would even with a GM due to relationships they have, but having the responsibility consolidated under one person whoâs keeping track of it all would be a good thing.
I think maybe he/she misread Preston Willettâs post. The visitor today, Shelley, will be taking multiple visits to us and other schools.
Seems like the GM handles the agents, backchannelling, negotiations, and (frankly) tampering. In addition, its possible/likely they manage the analytics firm that filters lists of candidates to pass on to the coaches. So yeah, they do have an evaluation role, but its mostly administrative so coaches can focus on fewer potential candidates. They arenât breaking down video, but they might be the guys that say âhere are 10 candidates for our open SG role â who should we prioritize coaches?â
So does anyone know how much overlap there will be between what a GM would do and what Brogdon will be doing?
why not just do them with no sound?
WRT to the notion of âFive in Fiveâ: Wouldnât a player already have to be in the transfer portal to play at a different school? Will exceptions be granted? Just a wee bit curious.
I would imagine theyâd have a second portal window if it passes. It will be a mess if so.
