Yeah, at this point I feel like the PAC is just resigned to being sliced into pieces and the remainder turning into like a volleyball and soccer conference or something.
The ACC has its magic forcefield its hiding behind at the moment. While I can see a couple ways they could potentially hold the fort and keep things together, I see no sign theyâre actually making a serious effort at doing any of those things.
Hmm. I must have posted it in a thread other than this one which means I may as well have tossed it into the ocean.
IIRC, I had four ideas, none of which were super-likely but most of them werenât mutually exclusive. The two that seemed like the best bet were:
the ACC successfully building the popularity of Olympic sports. The ACC is fantastic at field hockey, soccer, swimming, lax, baseball, etc and collectively theyâre all a big net financial minus. I mean, theyâre called ânon-revenue sportsâ for a reason and turning a few of them into things people actually want to watch (and thus go from stark negatives to modest positives financially) would help a ton. Soccer in particular is starting to get a little traction in the US, might be a place to start. Wouldnât be easy, thereâs a reason it hasnât happened yet, but there hasnât really been this kind of pressure before.
Turn the ACC Network into the money maker they hoped it would be. The GOR is the only thing holding the ACC together right now, and it honestly kinda feels like thatâs the only part of the ACC Network the ACC actually cares about. Theyâve half-assed and under-invested both money and development attention in the Network so far, but its not impossible that with serious investment it might still become something serious. Again, kind of a longshot, but its not impossible and if it happened would help enormously in holding the ACC together.
Yup Iâm at a point where Iâve talked myself into believing the GOR is actually good because it forces the league to hold still and maybe they can pick up some pieces once the GOR expires and the bulk of the moves are done.
A longshot for sure but not sure the conference really has any other options even without the GOR they donât have much to offer poach a school
I think youâre exactly right. Sure, as a UVA fan its a little frustrating watching moves get made and us just sit there. But speaking for UVA itself, thereâs no risk of getting rushed or bullied into a bad decision. The ACC doesnât get busted up piecemeal (hey, PAC12, I mean 10⊠8?) leaving folks like Cal wondering if the Mountain West will take them.
We get to see how things evolve, plan, and negotiate long-term plans from a position of strength (albeit short-term) based on how everyone elseâs experiences have gone. Doesnât mean weâll make the right decision in the end, but our odds are a lot better.
I love the ACC as much as anyone but I want UVA to play in the most competitive league as possible and it seems like the ACC is no longer able to be close to that.
I look forward to the GOR being challenged and defeated and UVA moving on.
for starters, a league that more than half of the universities arenât desiring to leave.
but maybe âcompetitiveâ was the wrong word, I want UVA in the âMain Eventâ or rather the top league, 10 years ago there wasnât the obvious gap that there is now (IMO) and I would like to see UVA move on since they are desired by both SEC & B1G and would have that chance.
Have a suggestion (been saying this since UT/OU to the SEC & USC/UCLA to Big 10), but feel like it would be too extreme.
With the 15 teams the ACC has, add Kansas, Baylor & WVa from the Big 12, and the best 6 left from the Pac 12, and form a 24 team super conference, with 4 regional pods of 6 teams each.
Doesnât add any major football powers, but for hoops does give you Kansas, Baylor & Arizona. Stanford traditionally has a very good overall sports program. WVa brings some regional appeal.
East pod of UVa, VTech, and the Carolina schools.
South pod of Clemson, GT, FSU, Miami, Kansas & Baylor
North pod of BC, Pitt, Syracuse, ND, WVa & Louisville
West pod of Stanford, Cal, AZ, Az State and 2 of WSU, OSU, Utah
I actually like this idea. I do believe if the goal is to keep UVa in a competitive conference then it has to come in the form of some sort of basketball super conference.
Iâve kicked the idea around of absorbing the Big East or at least some of the big players. But going all in on a national league feels way more interesting and would allow for football to remain somewhat intact/competitive.
And as far as a conference champ in football, do something like a 2 weekend playoff with the 4 pod winners. Because hoops would be so stacked, take the top 2 from each pod to play in an old school ACC 8 team/3 day format.
