“Welcome to college ball, kid”
Good test for Tony - LJ Cryer will shoot it right in Kihei’s face and maybe make him give Armaan and McKneely minutes at the 2
Just as a reminder, both Baylor and UCLA are consensus top 10’s, we are borderline top 25 and Illinois not ranked is most preseason publications. Clearly trying to set up a BU/UCLA final. Screw em. BU will have one of the best backcourts (Cryer and Flagler are only 6’1 and 6’3 fyi, though George is a beast. Good thing we get him early in the season) in the country but think they are thin up front. If Kadin takes the expected leap, with him, BVP and Gardner we could have the advantage up front
Definitely seems like that’s what they want with the pairings, but that should be what they want with two top 10 teams in the field.
Though, ff they hadn’t done that, we’d be playing Illinois in the first round, and one of BU/UCLA in the second. I like that we get one of BU/UCLA in the first and a chance to play the other in the second.
3 ways to look at it:
- I got 10 fouls and not afraid to use them.
- I concede the paint but go small and make him cover a 3-pt shooter like Traudt or (crosses fingers) the new Gardner.
- You don’t.
Or double some off of their worst shooter and force them to make perimeter shots
Throw out Reece, Isaac, Taine, BVP, Traudt and we win 90-60 (we shoot 100% from 3 and they shoot 100% from 2)
"Traudt is the highest-ranked recruit in this incoming class, but only by one spot, per 247 Sports; Traudt is 57th, guard Isaac McKneely is 58th, and wing Leon Bond is 61st, a tight band of four-star players right in Virginia’s recruiting wheelhouse. Interestingly enough, though, when discussing the newcoming players, Williford jumps from Traudt to Dunn, also a four-star recruit but the only prospect in the class ranked outside the top 100. If it sounds like we’re reading too much into a casual conversational transition then read what Williford actually said about Dunn when he made it:
“He reminds me – and I don’t want to put this type of pressure on him – but he reminds me of a young De’Andre Hunter,” Williford said.
Oh, word?"
Caffaro will administer 5 clumsy fouls fairly quickly. Who else do we have that can tag in for full contact engagement? Sheds will probably pile up the fouls too but if he goes to the bench we are in trouble.
Read between the lines here. When I say Red you say Shirt. Red…
Edit: lotta you guys here way ahead of the Dunn Train. Credit given
Behind a paywall obviously, so just a couple of additional quotes.
On McNeely… “Virginia’s initial evaluation was that he was a scoring guard who could shoot off the dribble or in catch situations. Since he arrived, though, the staff has been impressed with his ball-handling — he might not be Chris Paul, but he brings the ball up “while being heated up full-court” by Beekman, which is a lot easier said than done. Having more ball-handling never hurts, and it could make McNeely much more than a “stand over in the corner and shoot when you’re open” type of guy early in his career.”
When discussing Bond…“We’ve got some wingspans now,” Williford said. This was not the case a year ago, when the Cavaliers had pretty clearly delineated guards and forwards, with Beekman maybe the one guy with a potential NBA future. “All of a sudden, we just looked different,” Williford said. “I just said to Tony the other day, those first years out on the floor, between Traudt and Bond and Dunn, the floor looks different for us now.”
Thanks this gold. That McNeely quote might tell us a lot about our pg recruiting strategy real time and the possibility of punting to 24
I’m not gonna say I called it but……
Wonder what it could mean for Kihei’s minutes this season
Here is the article without a paywall
The huge question mark for this season is whether Kihei spends serious time as a de facto 2 like he did last year. If he does, our upside is limited. If he doesn’t, we have a chance to be special.
Bona (the dunker) is headed to UCLA
“Apparently news from Charlottesville travels fast. Several forum posters had apparently found out how high the staff are on some of the first year players and had been excitedly discussing it amongst themselves.”
