Recruiting-High Stakes September

Unfortunately I wasn’t listening to the audio, but he was walking up the steps of the Rotunda with his mom

How’s his mom old enough to have a 17ish year old kid?!?

Family is blessed with good looks.

They think it went about as well as could have hoped with Kaufman. He’s a tough read though.

Could not agree more. Loved labor day weekend first game of the season walking from the corner down the lawn to the stadium… good times

I hate mask pictures.

From all I have read this kid puts a ton of thought into everything he does. My guess is that the mask in the pic is either a conscious decision or just how he was when the photo was taken. Either way, I’m good with it.

Top 5 is a tough when there’s only really 4 teams involved. haha Progress I guess.

Indiana UVA UNC Purdue Louisville (even though idk how involved Louisville is) me thinks

List = decision relative soon, 6 weeks? I wonder if we can close the gap with what was accomplished the past two days. I assume the best chance we’d have is a decision sooner than later.

Yes, @HoozGotNext. Haha. Top ‘n’ lists are so subjective and rarely pan out to be the elite lists a few years later when a different criterion is used (e.g., NBA draft position). Witness DeA Hunter.

This kinda surprises me that he would announce a top anything, but I guess that’s every kid these days. Thoughts on if Kentucky might pop up in that 5 spot?

Yeah that’s what I’m wondering too. UK is being super sneaky through the dead period. I think that window has pretty well closed with Kaufman but who knows.

Well, I think we might assume that Virginia and Kentucky are selling two rather disparate visions of a collegiate career to Mr. Kaufman. If he should pick Kentucky, isn’t it likely that UVa was never the consideration we thought it was, and vice versa?

I don’t think that’s the right characterization. I think they just offer two different paths that a recruit has to decide between. They’re taking UVA seriously but decide on the different path which eliminates UVA. I think it’s a subtle but noteworthy distinction

Not sure that UVA wasn’t in consideration in that scenario but it means that he is not a UVA type of recruit. That is why I never regretted losing Juzang. Once he chose KY it proved he wasn’t the guy for us. Fortunately Jabri was. Let’s not jump the gun though it may come down to a choice between Indiana and us.

Two different paths vs. two disparate visions? I think that that is just a question of semantics with no real substantive difference. Virginia and Kentucky offer clearly and distinctly dissimilar choices. And, if much of what we’ve been led to believe is true, it would seem likely that Trey Kaufman would embrace the vision/follow the path offered by Virginia. We’ll know more later.

And, yet, Juzang later abandoned Kentucky for UCLA, which is an elite public university coached by an advocate of defense first. Perhaps he was the guy for us and simply made a bad decision.
