Haha. Which vote makes someone pessimistic?
That he’s not coming back
I dont see that as being pessimistic though. But I get it
I think he’s not coming back because most of the inside info we’re getting is leaning that direction. NBA Draft wise, I doubt he gets a firm promise. But I get the sense that since his group of guys he was brought up with the last 2-3 years here at UVA have moved on, he is looking to move on as well.
Great response, thank you
If it’s what we wants, sure I get you, but I just needed a way to short-hand it. Maybe we can go with the Rexiters and the Reemainers, following the Brexit convention.
I would be persuaded by inside info on Reece’s likely draft position, but if that’s out there, I haven’t seen it. The public info on Reece’s draft position is 45+, and trending towards undrafted.
With that being said, if he decides to come back then I’m not going to be shocked or anything. But I’m just anticipating he’s moving on.
Guess it depends on the feedback. If those providing that feedback tell him it’s in his best interests to return to college to continue refining his game, does he listen, or is his mind already made up? Because if it’s the latter, wouldn’t he have just declared without retaining his eligibility?
But that’s us trying to put ourselves in others’ shoes, which, in itself, is an exhausting — and Sisyphean — proposition.
Yeah what you’re saying is logical. There are a lot of moving factors, imo it makes sense for him to be back. I’m just hedging my emotions and wishes when it comes our roster and transfer hypothetical discussions.
I think one of the poll options should have been “learned pessimism / psychological self-protection”
“My no vote is about me, not Reece”
I think he only comes back if he is handed the keys, it’s him at the 1 and IMac at 2. Otherwise he may transfer if he doesn’t get a high grade.
I would be pretty disappointed in CTB if he didn’t hand the keys over to RB considering he gave Kihei all the freedom he needed and more and he’s far less talented.
I think Reece is going to come back.
The main reason is that his shot isn’t NBA-quality level at the moment. So it becomes a question of where will he be able to improve his shot the most. Does Reece feel that he’s gotten all the improvement he can make here at UVA? Or is there more that can be done here? Yes, in theory, at the professional level, the coaching and resources are better. To me, however, the downside in trying to improve your shot at the professional level is that they can release you at any point.
If Reece can get a guaranteed contract, then by all means, he should go pro. But if he’s late second-round or undrafted, then he’s looking at something very uncertain and returning to Virginia starts to make more sense.
Yes, but there have been plenty of 2nd round guys who got waived after the first year. Some really good college players in that list just from the 2021 draft, like Jared Butler, Marcus Zegarowski, Luka Garza.
Edit: Actually I think Zegarowski did not have a full year 2-way. Him and RaiQuan Gray were both drafted by the Nets, and may not even have been signed to NBA contracts?
What was Guy told by NBA in April 2019? Did he ignore it or heed it?
I hear what you’re saying, but its worth remembering that right now is the absolute worst part of the curve for “Why would Reece come back?” Everyone leaving is gone and he’s probably hearing them make plans, practices and games are done, he’s still stuck in classes, and the NBA stuff is either just starting or is right there on the horizon looking new and exciting. A week or two ago was probably the absolute worst, but right now is still bad.
However, that’s going to change. In a week or two recruiting will go from being “rumors about various players” to actually landing kids, and a few weeks after that maybe we’ll get a decommitted '23 or a reclassed '24 to sign and he’ll get to start thinking about how the team would run with Minor at the 5, or maybe Cain comes in as another guard. All of which is kinda fun and exciting to think about. And a few weeks after that, he’ll start getting real feedback from NBA teams, and it’ll go from “Wouldn’t it be cool to be in the NBA?” to (probably) “Ok, if you spend 8 hours/day doing shooting drills, maybe we’ll take you with a late second round pick.” It goes from fun fantasy to nitty-gritty actual-work slightly disappointing reality.
If he had made the decision to go into the draft now, like Franklin, I wouldn’t be surprised if he’d left, because right now kind of sucks. But since he’s probably waiting until May (because why wouldn’t he?) then he has a better chance of coming back.
Yes. The nitty gritty non fantasy part gets real. But I think Reece will surprise people if he has the chance to go head to head with other prospects in the pre draft stuff. Shit he may even surprise himself and think he gets better (8 hours per day as you say) in an professional setting
Lol. I guess it makes sense for him to come back, but I don’t think he’s going to come back. That’s all. But I don’t feel super strongly.
A friend of mine was working as a graduate teaching assistant at Penn State when Bhawoh Jue was trying to finish up his degree while simultaneously playing for Green Bay. There was evidently a funny email exchange that said, “Well, if we make the Super Bowl, I’ll probably have to drop the class and make up the credits in the future.”
