Why would we hire Sanchez post-Tony given his results at Charlotte? Not to be harsh, but really.
EDIT: Nvmd, was trending better than I remember. Still lots of questions though …

I would have to say quality of life? Charlotte was trending but transfer rules were going to continue to challenge them to improve and I don’t think he’s a hot candidate.
Although, you have a point. Jay is a Virginia guy, but Ron is really a Tony / Dick Bennett guy…
Also Charlotte got kinda screwed by losing their stud pg to Maryland in the portal. Jamir Nelson I think his name was
Or they didn’t re-up him and he knew this was a good time to leave with uva offering a safe landing spot
Sooooo can we poach that Brice Williams guy who transferred from Charlotte to Nebraska now?
If he is in fact a competitive recruiter, I’d imagine he may rather be number 2 at UVA and get guys to come in rather than have his talent poached.
Cool article for those that want a refresher on what kind of person / coach, Sanchez is:
And Aly Khalifa at BYU.
Yeah.
Sanchez was like “f that, Imma do the poaching now at Power 5”
Pretty sure he was on the hot seat despite this. Only got above 500 by winning a few CBI games
Which is crazy considering he was so much better than what was going on prior to his hiring (and thats with losing top talent to the portal in this day and age as a mid major)
It really is awful right now to be a mid-major or lower echelon high-major coach. When you recruit and develop talent to elevate your program they’re as good as gone to a HM / BT program the following off season.
College basketball is now like professional sports free agency without the contracts to at least let you plan your team for a few years. Chaos.
Just not too long
Yeah, it was a bit of a Shaka to Marquette, move (IMO), with hopefully the same success. It’s also very late for Charlotte and all their kids.
Wonder what the knock-on effects on our staff are: J-Willy still Associate? (probably yes) Carpenter gonna be the new 4th, non recruiting assistant? Zay move up to Johnny’s spot? Chase to GA?
I think you nailed it with the coaching tree
Ron/JWilly AHC
Vandross and Carpenter AC
Soddy whatever Soddy does
Zay in the top Admin role
Chase GA
I was looking around for some examples of staffs with two associate HCs, and Florida jumped out as a team that has that setup already.
Career win % is .480.
Super positive spin take: beekman coming back reinvigorates Tony after all the transfers and end to last season, he now wants to do at least 5-10 more years, williford like I should prob get a P5 HC gig after next season, Tony like yeah, I guess I should go nab Sanchez now for continuity
Baseless speculation, but it seems this could be a head-coach-in-waiting type move
My take…
JWilly still heir to the throne.
Sanchez prefers life as an assistant and on board as AHC to ease the transition (when it happens) / be that experienced right-hand
All other assistants level up one
Tony doing all this to guarantee that blocker-mover and pack line lives on post retirement
