Very similar track to Herb Jones- who was a complete non shooter in college, amazing athleticism/defensive skill. Is now a serviceable shooter in the league while maintaining that elite skill.
Dunn’s mechanics are fine enough (I.e. there is no significant overhaul needed), he just needs a more concise catch and release with consistency. Aka the reps others have referenced.
I’ll be pulling for him. I wish we’d helped him find his shooting stroke if it’s in there. He seemed to regress confidence wise shooting as the year went on. But I definitely will be pulling for him to find it.
I think the early draft buzz may have gotten to him based on ridiculously high level highlight type plays. Think he got somewhat less sound at times after looking to make highlights.
All part of growing. I am a huge RD fan. Seems like such a mature kid and I know his parents and they are great people and very grounded
I think Bryce Simon took RD at like 21/22 or so in this, to Thibs/Knicks. They both laughed about him going to Thibs because Thibs loves defense and wouldn’t care as much about him not having any offense.
Brice (JJ / J-Willy player from AU) has always been about 5-10 spots higher than RD compared to consensus, fwiw
And the fact that he was willing to come here without a scholarship because he believed enough in himself to earn a scholarship, shows the kind of confidence and tenacity that a GM will love.
New mock draft from The Ringer has Dunn in the second round at 36 to the Pacers. And the blurb isn’t too kind to Virginia.
Dunn is arguably the draft’s best defender, but he’s a total liability as a shooter. Playing with a big who can space the floor, such as Myles Turner, and a playmaker like Tyrese Haliburton could unlock him in ways his college team never could.
Worth remembering that first round picks have specific pre-agreed contract lengths (two years guaranteed, 3rd and 4th year team options) and amounts (determined by draft slot), but second round picks have contracts negotiated specific to the player and team, and they vary a lot in terms of guaranteed years and amount, as you can see in this rundown from the 2023 draft:
I’m still surprised there are people who think Dunn is coming back. He is gone gone. Weak draft + he’s 21. Even if he’s an early 2nd round pick he is gone.
The things he needs to improve on, the NBA will provide him better resources and he will have more time with no school to do so.
Next year the draft is way better, he will be a year older, and it will be harder for him to improve offensively. Reece learned the hard way “betting on himself”.
Went from early mid 2nd round to not in the projected field.
Reece is an interesting question. My guess is he’s going from probable 2-way last year, to probable 2-way this year, but we shall see. Plus he will get his degree (I assume?) and had another bite at the apple here.
