I listened to the podcast twice. Here’s my summary, cutting out a lot of the fluff (I enjoyed the whole podcast.
- Said a GM will be hired when they’re done with the current portal recruiting.
- Said that it made sense for him to keep the staff that brought him so much success at VCU and other places he had been (I like his loyalty), and thus, there were no assistant positions available for Guy and Wilkins. He offered them other positions but said that it didn’t make sense for them to take those because they are ready to be assistants. Said that Chase is still trying to decide what to do and that they are working on what he could do at UVA if he wants to stay. Later in the podcast, he said that he wants to make sure that all former players feel that they can drop by at any time like it’s their home.
- Gertrude is not yet cleared for physical contact but is working out and is very explosive.
- Players will come to town and start working out together on June 16, the start of summer school.
- Said that high school recruiting will be a huge part of future roster building. You could really hear the excitement in his voice talking about Chance Mallory, Silas Barksdale and Carrere. Called Chance one of the best incoming PG in the country and that he is physical on both offense and defense. Said that Barksdale’s skill level has “sky rocketed” in the past 5 months and that he has recently trimmed off 30 lbs. off his 6’8"/6’9" frame. He’s down to 220 lbs. now and hopes to get back up to 230 by season’s start. Said that Carrere is a 4.0 student and called him a “great” and “dynamite” player who can really shoot the ball and is excellent at handling and passing on the pick and roll.

just to add to your comment on Barksdale. He was around 235, then he, parents, coach and trainer decided to focus on S&C. He lost 30 lbs to get to 205, but has since put on muscle to get back to 220 and plans to keep working. That’s an awesome sign and shows how dedicated the young man is in his training. He may not RS, though Odom didn’t mention that part. That’s my two cents.
So excited for the season and great interview with Odom. Just a perfect fit for the job and glad a hometown boy is coming back home to lead this program.
He also reflected on past European players his family has brought over. The Odom’s have been on the scene a long time. Scouting Europe is nothing new to them. And they’ve had success. Which means they know their way around and most likely have tons of connections.

IF the HOOS have success this or in the next 2-3 seasons, I expect we’ll start to maybe sign some of those top top players. System is no longer an excuse and Odom is def willing to play the recruiting game unlike Bennett.

The proliferation of US military postings in various foreign countries does make for some good name/country mismatch potential. And then sometimes it’s around specific name trends that come from US culture. Germany and France have a complicated relationship with the name “Kevin” for example: Kevinismus - Wikipedia

Gotta believe it’s SMU that won’t be on the schedule this year since they made the Hoos play them twice last year - but that makes too much sense.
And they should force Cal and Stanford to make the trip to Hooville this year since we had to do that last year.
It would also make sense for a lot of Acc teams to leave an open date in Jan or Feb to see how the other teams are doing and then schedule a “non conference” game with each other between teams that are top 50 NET. Or even if another conference is willing… the challenge is the other Big 4 conferences haven’t needed to do that the last 4 years.
Could even keep it open - talk to Mountain West and a couple other top mid major conferences and reserve a date or two for a top 4 team?

Would really like to schedule another good team and another top 100-125 team. Right now the bad teams we are playing are typically rreeaaally bad, not like 150-200, like 300+
