I’m gonna miss the Head Coach Speculation thread. But all good things must come to an end.
Welcome Coach Odom! Even if he wasn’t your #1 choice, this an objectively good hire on paper. We’ll see how it turns out, but I’m optimistic as long as we have the NIL to recruit at a competitive level.
I’m hyped!
I will miss you coach search thread old friend!!!
Great hire! Excited for the future. Hope he’s here for the next decade plus.
Honeymoon phase, portal additions hits, clips all summer, and then once games hit we can finally start bitching and moaning about his tendencies that we start to notice. It’s beautiful.
Well said, Odom may not be a transcendent coaching talent like Bennett but he’ll do as well as he’s supported, and this is exhibited by the fact that he’s never underperformed in his career. He may not drastically overperform, but our program is in a pair of VERY competent hands. If we consistently provide him with top 20 resources, we’ll (at the least) consistently get top 20 teams out of him
I think people tend to underrate Odom’s X’s and O’s, and his general ability to adapt his scheme to his personnel which is something Tony struggled with his last couple years here. He’s had squads who run really good offense, squads who play really good defense, and a little bit of both some years like this season with VCU. Question will be whether he can maximize his coaching on both ends of the floor with better talent available.
But obviously won’t know anything for certain until we see his team in action here. Excited for the offseason to really begin for us.
Did VCU live stream the yellow/black scrimmage?
Yeah. They lost.
Odom is def underrated tactically and I’m very much excited to see what he runs here. Once coaches ascend to this level, you truly get an idea for what their vision is as a coach. Cause while it may be similar to what they’ve done prior in their career, it’s gonna be different here. Dan Hurley was NOT at all known for being an elite Xs and Os guy when he was hired from Rhode Island (was regarded as a defense first culture coach), but that obviously isn’t the case now.
b/c he [Hurley] imported an OFF scheme from offstaff?
Still, don’t think it changes my point. When you have the resources of a power conference job, you can expand on what you do holistically. Odom may be an elite tactician once given the resources of UVA, that’s what I’m trying to say. We won’t know obviously until he’s been here for a while, so we’ll see
I will say to Hurley’s defense, part of what makes him a good coach is he had the humility to realize where his weaknesses were and searched for someone who had a better solution than what he would’ve been able to come up with on his own.
It’s partially why I think if we’re able to get Aldrich here as an assistant that would be a huge deal, I want other high level X’s and O’s guys on the staff who are going to not only complement Odom as a coach but also challenge him on things that we could be doing better. Aldrich is a really, really good basketball coach.
Asking the hard questions. Here for it.
Candidates for the offensive coordinators we might go after two years from now:
Kirk Penny
Gabe Cupps dad
He must be. He’s at LW coaching for pennies and producing winning seasons.
I would have watched Bennettball for another two decades and not complained as the results were beyond anything I had ever imagined for UVA, but I am excited to watch a new style of play.
