šŸ€ The 2024-25 Hoos, Ron Sanchez edition…

I’ll miss Tony as a great steward of the men’s program and as a coach who won a ton of god damn games. I will not miss his offensive philosophy and inability to adapt. That said, I’m not excited at all about Sanchez continuing down that same offensive road. I hope we see pretty substantial changes in offensive sets this season … if not, I would prefer to move on from Sanchez at the end of the season.

I’m torn. I don’t feel any particular attachment to Tony’s schemes, even the Pack Line (gasp). However, I love the way that he built and led the program, and I don’t want to see that type of leadership fall to the wayside. I imagine that Sanchez follows Tony’s example in how he leads, so I want him to be successful on the court, but his results at UNC-C don’t leave me too optimistic.

I have no attachment to any schemes or pillars, just the school and success to be honest. I don’t want to get too hung up on trying to replicate Tony’s success-- I’m not sure it’s possible.

If the best coach available for us next year is someone with a drastically different style, I’d be totally fine with that!

I will keep going crazy for shot clock violations though. That part will be imprinted forever.

UVA’s record at Christmas?

  • 10-2 or better
  • 9-3
  • 8-4
  • 7-5 or worse

I think the biggest loss will be having Tony be the de facto national representative for UVA sports. When a casual sports fan heard UVA or Virginia Cavaliers, Tony Bennett was the first thing that came to mind. And what better representative could you possibly ask for? It’s a huge void and it will be interesting to see who fills it over the next handful of years

That’s a tough one but with the ACC likely to be underwhelming yet again, no worse than 8-3 outside of the league is probably a must to have realistic NCAA Tournament hopes, which means winning 2 of the 5 major nonconference games. Anything worse than that and you’re probably going to need 14-15 regular season ACC wins to go dancing.

Can we get 2 of those 5? You’d like to think we can pick off Memphis at home, especially since it’s a bit later on the schedule. Beyond that though, it won’t be easy. The Villanova game looms large.

Maybe I’m naive, but I just don’t see a mass exodus from the players as long as Sanchez and Tony’s crew are the staff.

There was a mass exodus from Ohio State even though they named an assistant to replace Holtman and he coached almost half of last season.

Again, I could be very naive on this, but Virginia is different.

Agree. But I am also naive. Guys go to Virginia for the reasons you go to Virginia, mainly. Recent transfers have been guys that see they wont play or have girlfriends in Nebraska.

I am also gullible sometimes

Makes me wonder if Tony’s been making calls to the players’ families to apologize and reassure. Sounds like something he might do.

Absolutely has been yes. And I am not Matt Norlander

Something we haven’t talked about much yet is what level of involvement with the program is appropriate for Tony going forward. Obviously we’re never going to show him the door, but it will be a delicate balance. He needs to give Ron some space so that it’s clear it’s his job and his team.

But at the same time if things go sideways and Ron doesn’t end up being the guy, I hope that doesn’t impact Tony’s support of the successor or the program in general.

TB becoming a LRA regular would be the most incredible thing ever. Even more epic if he’s like Hooz123 level negative about the next coach lol

Whatever his role we will know very little about it. We all know Tony well enough that he will remain deep in the background and behind the scenes.
