I was in the camp of the team not realistically making the NCAA Tourney this season before Tony retired. Hopefully this does not age well but I do not see the team finishing with a winning record in the ACC. No play makers! Sure we have improved shooting in areas but no one to go get buckets or really create for the guys waiting to catch and shoot and our defense has been degraded. The transfer ins are all role players at best on their previous teams. 0 Pro athletes on the team! Just really does not make for a good recipe for success. If it did, I think Tony would still be at UVA!! I will still be watching and cheering on the Hoos every game this season, hoping for the best!

I think if this roster were gonna cook, the Tides Inn permanent vacay wouldnāt have been as compelling

I do think making the tourney, however, is still a good possibility. I think that would be (1) a nice outcome, but (2) probably not enough on its own to extend Ronās tenure

I think making the tournament and winning 1 game gives him like an 80% chance of keeping the job. I think weād basically only go a different direction if we had word through back channels that a Shaka or Otz level guy was available.

Feels like Sanchez is in Rodney Terry territory where he needs to do so well, that it basically forces Carla to give him the job. Itās a tough spot to be, but maybe the best chance for one of Tonyās guys to take over as HC.

You guys thinking way too simple here. TB brings Ron back as Co Associate HC. So we have two. The deal with Carla is one year under Ron then equitably Jay Will gets next year no matter what. By then Kyle Guy will have graduated and he becomes the head guy forever

I donāt know what the right % is, but itās hard to argue with your framework. If inteRon takes this situation and turns into a better outcome than Tony was able to produce since 2019, it would be kinda hard to make a case against giving him the full gig unless you had reverse inquiries from some big name sustained success type of coaches. Hiring a new coach is hard. Iād bet for every success story you could call to mind at a reasonably name brand school in the last 10 years there would be 2 or 3 failures/disappointments that are harder to think of. The thing is, even if you were able to land Shaka or otzelberger or whoever else might be on your wishlist, itās still not a guarantee for success.
Anyway, we wonāt be winning a tournament game so Iām not worried about this particular scenario.

Maybe yours was a bit tongue in cheek, but weāve seen the model before. Gene Keady brings Mat Painter back to Purdue for a year, and then turns the reins over to him. A few minor differences, though. Painter was hired with the understanding that he would replace Keady. I have no idea what sort of discussions took place between Tony, Ron, & Carla concerning the future of the position. Also, this looks a bit like the Wisconsin situation. The only difference was that Greg Gard didnāt take an outside HC position before becoming Associate Head Coach. But, Bo Ryan did resign abruptly a few games into the season. Maybe Coach Bennett has more Wisconsin in him than we thought.
