šŸ€ The 2024-25 Hoos, Ron Sanchez edition…

That would exhaust Dante’s final year of eligibility, no?

The fit for both parties always seemed a bit odd. Warley best suited to fast paced offense to use his downhill slashing. I guess the defense made sense.

I dunno why, but this cracked me up:

Adjusting to life in the United States hasn’t been challenging for him, said Sharma, whose hometown is Milton, Ontario. ā€œThe biggest transition is just the numbers, like kilometers versus miles, Fahrenheit versus Celsius. That’s really it.ā€

ā€œGuys Ontario is really not that far away from the US borderā€

I think it actually IS the US border?

Harris has two years left.

Suburb of Toronto. Little over an hour to reach the Niagara border crossing.

That’s true. Milton is so close to NY!

And he went to school here:

Though if there’s an adjustment issue, this is probably the bigger problem:

Enough people around that traffic while driving is a thing?

Seriously. Dude just quit the team seemingly because he wasn’t going to get enough playing time. Coaching change is also a totally valid reason to leave, but regardless, he quit the team and intends to play elsewhere. Why would he practice with the team or get it participate in team activities? That would make no sense to me at least.

This is why the portal era sucks. It’s nearly fandom-killing to have a series of one year rentals who might be great at UVA or might stink but could never be one of my favorite all-time Hoos. But to have a guy come here for three (five?) months and then portal back out without ever playing a game just proves the whole system sucks for alums who actually care about the university.

That has nothing to do with ā€œthe new realities of college basketballā€ and everything to do with Tony Bennett quitting a month before the regular season. Trying to tie Warley’s departure to the evils of the Portal is a giant reach.

Agreed that there’s a lot to dislike about Warley leaving and the general state of roster stability in college hoops. But as a silver lining, I think this also shows that Dai Dai has been playing well* and likely had already eaten into Warley’s projected minutes. The video clip where Ron talked about Dai Dai a few days ago was telling - his eyes really lit up when he described his wiggle. And frankly anyone who re-portals before a season starts didn’t have his heart in it to start. So I’m not too worked up on Warley’s departure.

*I do realize that we also just lost our scrimmage to Georgetown, so my hopes remain modest for the season

When I heard Ron talk about enjoying ā€œthe journeyā€ this season … I further reset expectations on wins. Hoping to see some promising play from our young guys.

Wouldn’t have happened if Tony hadn’t quit. Also wouldn’t have happened pre-portal.

I can’t get excited about Dai Dai after seeing his stats last year and his performance in B/W.

I can after seeing his play in the NIT, the third quarter of the blue white, and his minutes vs Georgetown

The secret quarter! No fair!

He’ll be both fun and frustrating. He’s going to turn it over a bunch, but he’ll make some great plays. Warley caused him fits when he defended him.

Really want to know what his ceiling is as an all around playmakers - distributor, finisher at the rim, etc.

The crying after Ames balls out this year and then hits the portal next March is going to be epic.
