I totally respect other opinions, but I also think people are way overthinking this. UVA is a great job.

  • Our pay is comparable with all but the top echelon of schools
  • We are in one of the most desirable college towns to live in
  • We are in the middle of prime recruiting territory
  • JPJ is still among the best venues in the sport and has received constant upgrades in terms of player necessities (weight rooms, recovery rooms, locker rooms, etc)
  • We have very recent history of high level success and excellent donor support
  • While the ACC is in some trouble, UVA is generally thought to be in decent position to make it to one of the big conferences when it all explodes. And even if we somehow don’t, we’ll still be committed to at least fielding a great basketball team like a Big East school

Yeah, we don’t have a massive NIL collective operating at the edge of the rules, and that will turn off some folks, but again, this a massive sport. There are many many coaches. There are many good and great coaches who would absolutely love to try and make things work at UVA. We are a very very good job.

Awesome. Will wait on the other 11 of these!

Not worried about anyone that scrimmaged yesterday so that leaves 4 players. Buchanan played so not concerned there. McKneely just posted that so he’s back. Just leaves Bliss and Dai Dai. Bliss injury is very feasible, given his offseason. Dai Dai is the wildcard - on this team in general. But I expect him and all to stay.

Also rumor on Twitter that McKneely and his GF broke up so poor guy has had a rough couple of weeks.

I actually think Dai Dai is less of a wild card under Sanchez. You’ll prob see a lot of high ball screens.

Agree, but doing it might be more of a team unity thing. IMO. I guess Warley and Saunders did something the other day

NIL helped get Dai Dai. It’ll help retain him too.

People need to look at other schools message boards. Everyone thinks they have the worst NIL offering in P4. UNC fans complain about it all of the time.

The money is absolutely there for us to be competitive on that front. Just look at this offseason. We put multiple offers on the table well over $200k each. The amount Chance is expected to make is massive.

I think Bennett was genuine when he said he feared he was holding us back on that front. He was okay with it happening behind the scenes but was never going to proactively use it as a tool.

Good discussion on this. I’ll just add this to the banter - nobody is really pulling great, established coaches anymore, these days. It’s been a while since Bill Self left Illinois for Kansas. Let’s look at the good and/or notable coaches and/or notable jobs right now:

  • Scheyer - legacy guy; no track record
  • Hubert - same
  • Autry (Cuse) - same
  • Pitino - got the Johnnies job from a low major after his shady circumstances
  • Calipari - kinda beat the posse out of town, tbh
  • Pope - he left a power 5 job, but that fanbase was super skeptical of the step up (at least at first)
  • Hurley - came from a mid-major
  • Otz - from a mid-major (tho it hurts me to call UNLV that)
  • Muss Buss - one of the few of the bunch to really make a ā€œchoiceā€ move, but he basically went home
  • Shaka - beat the posse out of town
  • Enfield - not exactly a beat the posse move, but more or less
  • Cooley - another of the rare ā€œchoiceā€ moves to move up, but is it working?
  • Painter - pretty close to Scheyer and Davis (legacy)
  • (out of date, but…) Beard to Texas - went to his alma mater

Who am I forgetting?

I think our lane is gonna be legacy (J-Willy or Ronchez) or mid-major step-up. Maybe superstar assistant, but that is really really rare in hoops (they typically have to get a head job first, unless they are lucky enough to be a legacy). I doubt we wind up being one of the rare intra-power 5 moves or one of the super rare top 50 power 5 moves.

As of right now where are you at?

I put Successful Mid Major coach. Almost cowarded out and picked power 5 coach but then I remembered ā€œThats how losers thinkā€

It will likely be someone with HC experience, but I reeeeally want to kick the tires on Luke Murray.

I’m intrigued by him, too, but (1) so much of the intangibles stuff is so hard to know given he’s always been an assistant (and maybe not even the head assistant? Isn’t it Kimani Young), and (2) he’s pretty much from a coaching tree of guys that aren’t exactly LRA favorites: Sean Miller, Chris Mack, Danny Hurley. It’s like a rogues gallery…

EDIT: I should add, though, that the assistant moving to a head guy somewhere else, has happened a few times recently: tommy Lloyd, South Carolina (Lamont Paris), Kansas St (Tang) and all with some success.

I’d be good with Young too, I just want Bill Murray on our sidelines

ā€œconsistent power 5 coachā€ Is that Brad Brownell’s music I’m hearing? :joy:

I just read on Young’s wiki page that he was caught with a Nate Newton size haul of weed when he was 23 or so, and I guess that answers why he hasn’t been as in demand… (not judging or saying it’s right…)

Dai Dai has an agent right?
