šŸ€ The 2024-25 Hoos, Ron Sanchez edition…

Always excited except when Leitao was there and I was out of the country when Sean S was playing.

Totally agree on the connections. Jason still being there is a huge deal for me and I lnow Ron pretty well. But I am very loyal so Jay Willy is my guy

i think the uva job is attractive to mid major guys compared to most P5 coaches would be taking a ā€œstep downā€ from where there at . the acc isn’t how it used to be NIL is good but def needs to be better

Tony Bennett was a bonafide coach and it attracted him to UVA.

We went to have a very competitive NIL to not a very good one pretty quickly.

What would be a top job that attract a ā€œbonafideā€ coach. Outside of attendance almost every blue blood hits 3 -4 on your list and bot sure any program doesnt tick at least 2 of those boxes.

I think the first couple years of NIL for the new guy will be pretty strong. I think there will be a rally around the flag effect from the top donors to try and ensure we don’t fall off to hard.

Has attendance been bad? Just scanning box scores from last season, they were right around 14k for most games.

Yeah I don’t see JPJ being anything but a big positive. Crowds are great when the team is good and we have one of the best home court advantages

Facilities and proximity to major recruiting grounds (North Carolina, DMV, Richmond/tidewater, and even philly/jersey and eastern parts of midwest hoops) are a bonus. Especially in the portal with kids sometimes looking to be closer to home

Posted attendance is not actual attendance.

Last year lower bowl was 50% for some ACC contests. Upper bowl maybe 75% for ACC.

Other than the 1-2 games per season, I wouldn’t classify as a sellout.

I gave up my season tickets because I could pay 25% of what I paid face value via secondary for as good if not better seats.

Yeah, I’ve been a season-ticket-holder every year in JPJ.

It hasn’t been half-full since before 2014.

I have noticed, post-COVID, less enthusiasm for a 9 pm week night game, and any non-conference cupcake on any day. But I bet that’s true of all programs with a big arena.

All I know is that in my lot, if I’m not there within 45 minutes of tip for a weekend or 7 pm week night ACC game, I get thrown into the deck. That’s been true for the past 10 years. And those are the folks with lower-bowl and low upper-bowl tickets.

Yeah, I’m not a season ticket holder but probably go to 5-6 games at JPJ each year. I can’t really recall a game where I thought attendance was ā€œpoorā€. Not jam packed for mid majors on a Tuesday night in December but not poor.

Anyone have a good comp for a similar level coaching job?

Michigan? Maryland? Iowa? Just pulling these out of thin air, they may be totally off base.

Close but md and iowa dont have the recent success.

Saturday noon game with Wake last year that was pretty much a must win. Not poor, but not packed.

Tech 7p weekday game. Granted a couple min before tip.

Other ACC games were much lower. Not bad but not anything I’d be proud of.

Season tickets through UVA are ridiculous. Don’t get me wrong, super thankful for those who can afford to donate the insane levels it costs to get good tickets, but for regular people it’s sooo much more cost effective to just buy tickets on the secondary market.

JPJ is closing in on 20 years and is still considered one of the best venues in the sport. There are still extremely high level donors who make sure the program has what it needs. The fanbase has become very well respected within the college basketball world (see Reece Davis comments on UVA hosting College Gameday for example). Plus you’re a short drive from the DMV recruiting areas.

Obviously this isn’t a Duke UNC Kentucky Kansas job, but it’s a damn good one. There aren’t but a handful of coaches in a position that they wouldn’t atleast hear out UVA.

The attractiveness of the UVa job will come down primarily to money. What do we have for NIL and what are we willing to pay for a coach/staff? ACC, academics, facilities – things that used to matter – don’t really matter that much anymore. If anything, the ACC is a negative and others have caught up in terms of facilities since JPJ opened. And academics? That will only be a selling point to a small minority of recruits. These guys want to get paid, which is a big reason why we’re in the situation we’re in with Tony leaving.

I mean, 7-8 years ago if you asked 100 people in the college basketball world if UVa or Kansas State was the better job, UVa gets the nod probably almost unanimously. Today, that’s probably flipped based almost solely on NIL.

I also think there will be some top mid-major coaches who will be more inclined to be patient given the new landscape. I think both Mike Young and Earl Grant, for example, are pretty solid Xs and Os guys and developers. Would either of those guys take the VT or BC jobs today knowing what college basketball has become? It’s doubtful. I’m not comparing us to VT or BC, but the idea that a mid major coach will jump on any P5 offer is probably not the reality anymore.

Anyway, if we have top-end money, we can attract quality candidates. But, we also won’t really know until spring how attractive the job really is because we don’t know who else will have openings. Will we be the best job available? Not if Mike Woodson shits the bed again this year and Indiana opens. What if Self steps down? What happens with Larranaga after this season? Miami has money to burn. What about Villanova or Memphis?

Anyway, lots of moving parts with no obvious answers anytime soon. The good news is our AD and administration probably will get an idea in the weeks ahead about what type of candidate might be interested as preliminary inquiries with agents will start to take place behind the scenes.
