The College Basketball Scouting youtube page has officially started uploading highlight reels for new additions to the portal.

Much like a groundhog failing to see its shadow is evidence of an early spring, this signifies the beginning of Portal Season.

Chaz Lanier probably made that guy some money with how he’s played this season. Though astute observers might be noting how the 3s translated much better than the inside-the-arc scoring for Lanier, and that this guy isn’t the best marksman.

With Revenue sharing and the potential for schools to overpay to retain certain players

Will the following players portal?

Donald Hand Jr

  • Yes
  • No
0 voters

Kwame Evans Jr

  • Yes
  • No

With NIL and revenue sharing, will UVA retain more than 6 players?

  • Yes
  • No

Also a reminder (mostly to myself). Whenever the random 6’1 mid Major guard averaging 13.5 ppg on 33% from 3: Dai Dai would average 30 ppg in that league

He’s terrible. Pitt fans wanted to pack his bags for him

In the front court we want to do everything we can to keep Anthony Robinson and go hard after Kwame Evans Jr if he portals from Oregon.

Ernest Udeh Jr TCU’s center who was covered, got Trilly portaled today. Which might be more evidence of a Jamie Dixon retirement. In that case we need to do everything in our power to get David Punch as a back up for 4 for us; he starts for TCU but Im sure he would be willing to develop for a better program.

I’m assuming Cofie and Saunders are gone once Sanchez is gone. And Blake heads back west to one of St Marys/Gonzaga or UCLA

Hope we keep Cofie but won’t miss Saunders.

A guy with a source claiming Hand Jr wouldn’t transfer, and also citing Trilly’s comments about Hand Jr’s camp’s loyalty and wanting to ride it out (and them not really understanding how beneficial it is for him to get out of BC) has now 180d

Go get Hand Jr. Literally had a dream last night that we ran a Dai Dai Gertrude Hand Jr Kaleb Banks David Punch small ball 5 lineup that was cooking

Jaland Lowe’s god father is Jai Lucas’ dad so if he ends up portal he will probably end up at Miami if not back in Texas with Cam Corhen

My current list. Based on who I think could be portal entries. And being on the list doesn’t mean you have the H&T endorsement; just that you make sense sorta regionally or could have value from the new staff I don’t see. And there will no doubt be surprise entries, kids who don’t transfer because they get overpaid at their current schools, and the staff engaging with random mid Major prospects that can be hit or miss (see JP Peagus at Auburn who busted and Jhamir Brickus at Villanova who would have been incredible for us at Dai Dai and Rohde got their footing)

My quick thoughts, our best bet at immediate success is trying to retain as many players on the roster as we can to continuity and then supplementing any openings with Donald Hand Jr, Kwame Evans Jr, and AJ Swinton as a bench wing developing.

David Punch as a bench 4 would be really fun. and L’Amael Etang really intrigues me. I even saw him liking Jay Huff posts on Instagram and I doubt a French national would feel that attached to central Ohio is Anthony Grant retired.

Portal talent will be down with 5th years being gone (for now) and also teams with even more amped up NIL budgets overpaying. So I think it’s really important to find Dai Dai Ames and Elijah Saunder types (underclassmen with meh stats that can make big jumps in improvement) with the dream being finding your next Hunter Sallis and adding them to a roster that already has a few veterans.

Don’t think Silas Demary Jr and Yanick Niederhauser will be realistic for us if they portal, and I am always fearful of really overpaying even if its not my money LOL. Jizzle James and Finley Bizjack: The Jack and Jizzle merch would be insane. I like Kaleb Banks a lot but I don’t know if our next coach seems him as starting 4 material. Still a little raw but if the 5th year comes to be a thing he has immense value.

At HS, get Chance Mallory back on board and then try to flip Kareem Stagg (he follows UVA basketball on his own volition. Also follows a few former UVA football players from the 757 like Eli Harold)

I thought the same and then went back and looked at who performed best against our toughest foes…. Something to be said for Saunders there.

TBH, I am not excited about either of them. Cofie probably has more room to grow (physically as well as skill-wise) but I am a little disappointed that he hasn’t seen a lot of improvement as the season has go on (good last game, though). Saunders just freaks me out when I see him glued to the floor on defense and also when he is in rebounding position. So many guys jump over him to get the rebound or tip it back out. Seems like every time you see him grab an offensive rebound, it is soon followed by a whistle for a foul. Doubt he gets much stronger or quicker off his feet.

Don’t disagree with any of that - he’s a 4 in a 3 body and is slow and can’t dribble.

Of the names to enter today this is the one that has my eye

True freshman 3 years left and solid vs the power 5 schools. A candidate for that back up 4 development piece

Ha, funny you say that, when I was looking up the other UNF kid, I saw this guy’s stats and thought he was probably the most effective player on the team. The highlights make him look like more a shooter than he is (only 2.7 3PA per 100 possessions). And he is ground-bound (5 dunks on the season) and doesn’t get much in the way of defensive stats. But he’s got good hands (10.3% TO rate), a nose for the ball (13% OR rate), and is crafty around the rim (58% on 2s on 25% usage).

Looks more like an under-sized 5 at this point, IMO.
