Weāll see what the numbers are at the endā¦should be lower without the 5th year players. I think itās just the shorter window combined with more agent involvementā¦itās getting more organized basically. Better to get in early.
Yeah, with the huge $ being thrown around, schools and donors are gonna want some sort - or many sorts - of guarantees or reimbursements - or who knows what theyāll come up with? Itās wild and the rules, such as they are, seem very - how should I put it - very flexible.
Plus, if collectives have to Puke 𤮠their cash in the next 2 months, itās time to make hay
Edit: I did not use a Puke 𤮠emoji
Edit2: there is a Puke 𤮠emoji glitch
Transfer fees only exist because multi year contracts exist (itās the buying out of the rest of the contract). No transfer fees when a soccer player runs down his contract to the end and doesnāt renew.
This is where UVA has already failed. Tennessee lost both big men to the portal last year. (Aidoo & Awaka) Instead of rolling with their development guys like Phillips and Estrella, they actually went out and bought two experienced dudes in Okpara and Milicic. Good thing too, because Estrella had a foot issue and was shut down in late November.
When you have a glaring need, you have to fill it. UVA did a half ass job when all the bigs bounced after 23.
The biggest difference between Tennessee & UVA this past year athleticism & physicality. The Vols have some grown ass men & a true PG, while UVA did not.
I will neither confirm nor deny I have anything to do with this. @DFresh11 is my witness.
I can see Fresh standing next to you saying āYou should add a poll while youāre at itā.
I mean, it does though. Like 90% of NBA players play out their contracts, or if they are traded, itās the teamās decision. The only guys with enough market power to force trades and quiet quit until they get what they want are the stars and maybe a few in the tier just below that. It gets a lot of attention and can look obnoxious, but most of the league is fairly stable. And because of contracts, even when a super star forces a move, their team can still get something in return.
Thereās no comparison between that and the total shitshow that is CBB right now. Every player being a free agent every year is insanity. There is a reason no professional sports league on earth is run like this.
Anyway, you probably werenāt trying to say contracts are useless - Iām just riffing off it. But the current state of things just drives me crazy. Nobody would ever design this system purposefully. Weāve just fallen into it due to so much incompetence and itās exhausting. I miss just having a team and recruiting high school kids with an occasional transfer who you knew wanted to finish out their career with you. The whole fun part of college sports was you could get to know the guys and watch them develop. Now youāve got guys cycling between three schools in three years and weāre all talking about single-year mercenaries. If my pro team signs a dude I get to follow him for more than a year for goodness sake. The pros arenāt supposed to provide a better chance to bond with players than college!
Rant overā¦. Back to the portal.
Counterpoint: I enjoy the annual roster reinvention, I enjoy never feeling āstuckā with a middling roster, and I enjoy VIP status on a site that specializes in tracking, charting, and explaining everything!
Yeah itās so hard stay invested. I barely pay attention to high school recruits anymore knowing itās a low chance if they will fully develop at their original school. Iām all for players getting paid. I just want some structure.
The portal** makes some die-hards more die-hard (guilty), but it pushes away the casuals. Guess which is more important for the overall health of the sportā¦
** by which I mean the no-sit out rules, NIL, and no regime to incent guys to stick around over the long term.
Viewership is up this year
Tourney viewers are, right? I saw that, tooā¦
We shall see.
Yep, longer engagement period for diehards, and you have increased legalized betting which helps you farm engagement from that crowd during the season. There is no going back to what it was. Best case for those who want stability is multi-year contracts. Still canāt force a player to play but could force buyouts.
The thing I most want to see is some sort of compensation for the team losing the player. Doesnāt necessarily have to be money.
Would also like to see someone collect data on the % of guys who enter the portal but return to their original school. Think that number will increase too.
Yeah up like 8-9%. I suspect it could be because of Cinderellaās absence. Less exciting with no mid major runs, but big schools have lots of fans.
Waiting on the Luke Bam transfer highlights to drop and was getting annoyed they havent already, until I realized SEVEN HUNDRED people entered yesterday. My guy is swamped!
