⛹️‍♂️ Thijs De Ridder Official Thread

My take on continuity: of course this team would be better if they’d already played together for a year. But they can still be very good even without that. It’s just one factor. Feels (to me) like conventional wisdom (not limited to UVA fans) has kind of over-indexed on that one factor over the last couple of months.

And I’m pleased Odom is working HS recruiting hard. We’ll never again be as “non-continuous” as this year (knock on wood).

We we’re continually non-continuous one could say.

UNC definitely does not have more talent on its roster than we do. You are not looking closely if you think so. Also, Hubert Davis can’t coach. I’m not worried about UNC

Did NC State end up having a decent portal class? How does that compare to us?

I’m actually interested to see how Davis does without either of the chucker boys.

TDR following Hall and Tillis now.

I kept up and think Graham generally looking right on the deRidder story at the time of writing . So I guess I won’t change teams . But you do have a valid point and know more Graham history. Wait for next Graham piece. :+1:

How was Graham generally looking right? He said TDR was starting summer session last week. Which he clearly did not.

To refresh what Graham wrote which you are citing wrongly. Graham wrote “The Thijs de Ridder saga is nearing a happy ending for UVA Basketball.

The word getting out on Monday was that de Ridder, a 22-year-old Belgian power forward, is in the U.S., and is expected to be enrolled in the second summer session at the University of Virginia next week.

Remember that report from last month that de Ridder had decided to play professionally in France?

We threw water on that back then, reporting that de Ridder was just waiting for a thumbs-up from the admissions office at UVA.

Which I can understand, because the guy is 22, which would make him a late bloomer academically.

All should be fine, is the word”

SO … Graham said the word was he was in USA which was generally right (though one can quibble that maybe he flew in a couple days later) AND he said he was expected to enrolled in SECOND SUMMER SESSION which seems to be accurate and the staffs current viewpoint. And all should be fine which also appears to be staffs view

Second summer session just started, so that was inaccurate

And he put up that story after De Ridder posted a IG story about flying to the US, so that wasn’t exactly breaking news.

I give up. Graham was very positive on de Ridder joining the team when other writers were neutral. No more discussion on Graham from me. Not trying to stir up the largely negative Graham replies. hopefully de Ridder officially comes on board soon. lol

Graham is a hack with a blog.

Here are my main points:

  • Graham was positive based on a reported fact that turned out to be inaccurate.
  • I don’t think any of the few remaining traditional journalists on the UVa hoops beat are great sources for “scoops” type news, because most of them (Madia, Teel, Willet, Barber, et al) aren’t really in that business. For better or worse. They can be good at the interviews and reported stories stuff, but they aren’t good sources for knowing what’s going on that hasn’t been publicly reported.
  • The best source of De Ridder news specifically seems to be Nick Kalinowski on Twitter, who Griff Aldrich (or someone in that sphere) seems to feed stuff to.
  • I happen to like Graham’s old school pugilistic journalism style (like the FOIA stuff from last year) but, also, I don’t find him very insightful or able to fairly analyze the info he does get.
  • T(L)DR: I like the idea of Graham, but the actual Graham doesn’t really live up to the potential.

And also, let me be a little more pointed: you didn’t know that piece of info was inaccurate, and when you found that out, your instinct was NOT “Oh hey, I didn’t know that. My bad.” It was to double down on your main point, even though the factual underpinning for it was now gone.

I will say Madia gets scoops on the baseball front every now and then. I believe he was the first to report that O’Connor was turning down the A&M job last offseason.

Okay, I guess we need to move this line of posts to a “Graham is a Tool” thread? I keep hoping for de Ridder news only to find out the flurry of posts are about links that I refuse to click on because the author has a long history of making stuff up.

Yes please! The stupid visa delay is resulting in this thread devolving

You are far too kind. You left out four or five really descriptive adjectives.

But I won’t clutter this thread any further. Peace.

Is De Ridder STILL in Charlottesville? Or the US? I don’t think I ever saw either way.
