If there’s someone out there that thinks they’re gonna do a credible video analysis and not have to watch way too much Tre Norman doing a bad Boogie Fland impression, well … good luck. (Subtweeting you here @Cuts_from_The_Corner. It’s time to watch some janky streams with the rest of us)
Also, this is decent:
I remember much of the excitement about Power in high school involved his passing, both in the interior and on the perimeter. There was an idea that the right coach could leverage him as the kind of multilevel distributor that usually leads good offenses. He really does a lot of the connective things that BVP did, but has the shooting to tie it all together.
I’d think of him in that way: a versatile piece who can be a playmaker or function off ball. There’s a lot there that a good offensive coach could leverage. Yet to be seen if the staff gets the most out of him.
First of all, how dare you?
Maybe I’ll just clip ALL of his college possessions. That sounds like something I’d do…
I haven’t actually looked into what’s there yet but I would prefer glimpses at the college level over janky film of him dominating high school kids, for sure.
Yeah, I liked the section in the On3 article about this skill:
In many possessions, Power would be the second or third player with the ball in his hands on the team. Off the catch, his teammates would run actions off him to get the ball. In this game, many of Power’s passes did not lead to direct baskets, but his pass was the one that drew the defense and led to the kick-out or drop-off, a hockey assist.
Power moved the ball well, and he took care of his possessions. There was no over-dribbling; everything was decisive and with a purpose. Along with Power’s 2 assists, he did not turn the ball over, playing 36 of 40 minutes.
I think the offensive to-dos for Power and the coaching staff are:
- Bring his mid-post game more to the surface. For him to be a more featured offensive option, he needs to do more than spot up.
- Find some actions that have guys moving and cutting off of his catch to use his passing abilities.
I wish their was a stat for “effective passes” or something like that. Basically any pass that gains an advantage for the offense. I think that would give a clearer view of playmaking ability than just assist rate.
I’m sure this is either literally or mentally kept track of by teams when scouting and watching film.
“As such, it wouldn’t be surprising to see Power have a slow freshman season but then break out as a sophomore. Regardless, he has the skillset to be a one-and-done at the college level.”
When looking at next year’s team, I think we can be pretty good…at least bubble-level. For me, the difference between being pretty good and potentially more dangerous, is Gertrude.
We’ll swap Groves & Dunn for Power & Saunders. I believe Power can at least give us what Groves did right away, with a much higher ceiling. Saunders & Dunn are very different players, and there will be some drop off defensively, but we won’t have the same offensive limitations.
Swapping Robinson and/or Lang for Minor to me is a slight upgrade.
Point guard…this one’s tricky. Obviously a huge upgrade at backup PG swapping Harris for Bliss. As much as I like Warley, he’s not Reece. But he is 6’7 which gives us more lineup flexibility than a 6’2 PG does. Can Warley & Bliss combined give us the 14 pts, 6 assts with limited turnovers that Reece did? I don’t think it’s a stretch but we’ll see.
IMac will likely be better, and was already pretty good.
If Murray can shoot close to the same level as this year, with more volume, he can be a nice weapon.
That leaves Gertrude. He needs to play, and we all know this. If we can get Justin A. level production from 2013-14, I think we could be quite a bit better than this year. Not Final 4 quite yet, but at least capable of winning 1-2 in the NCAAT.
Edit - so after I posted this long message, I realized I put in the Power thread by accident. Not exactly the right place…sorry all
Agreed on Gertrude. But also, multiple other young guys have huge upside that adds to the Beta. Blake: got a lot of experience as a first year and has had an offseason to work on his body and game. ARob: if Fresh is excited about beast potential so am I. Power: Groves at minimum, but very good reason to be optimistic about monster upside. Even Saunders: some real flashes even when the stat (and usage) was focused on Ledee.
Good reason to expect early bumps with so many new guys, but the new roster is oozing with potential. Could it go all wrong? Sure. But it could get real interesting by February.
Its strange they dont… they track it in professional soccer.
I think it might tracked (estimated, really) in non-public settings:

Great find - that was fun.
The Nolte face needs work, but I see promise. I’m eager to see how it looks after a redshirt year with Mike Curtis.
Agree on much higher ceiling, but not that Power will replace Groves’ production right away. Groves had played 4 years, including 2 as fringe starter / 6th man in the Big 12. He was fairly plug and play as a pick and pop big man.
Power played only 180 minutes and was barely in the rotation at Duke. He is a high level talent, but still unproven at this level. I think @StLouHoo has hammered on this point.
Yeah I think it’s more right to say that Saunders will give us what Groves did right away (almost identical headline efficiency and usage numbers).
I think that’s closer. But a little earlier in his development curve. And also as others have said, his usage wasn’t super high.
I kinda like Saunders for his defensive versatility, most of all. Maybe I just watched the right stretches / looked at the right box scores, but he looks like a very nice perimeter big / WF defender
Will there at some point be a television commercial featuring TJ Power in a Thomas Jefferson costume?
- Yes
- No
