šŸ€ Tony Bennett Retires, Ron Sanchez to be Interim HC

If this is accurate, then it probably confirms 2024-25 is an audition for Sanchez, which is how it should be.

That’s like the darkest possible outcome lol but unlikely imo. But Hooandtrue is right, in the current landscape there’s no ā€œwe’re going to be so good (or bad) for years to comeā€ anymore. Teams turn over their entire rosters with a new coach and it can be night and day different (see Louisville). Not that it’s a recipe for success but hard to speculate out into the future nowadays and that’s unfortunately true even if TB had stayed two more years

I don’t know if it’s that easy. Sure that’s how it’s worked out at some places, but counterpoint - Wake Forest. Good coach, good transfer recruits, 4 years and counting…

Nope, I don’t even get on 247, but I’ve heard this similar version elsewhere so only kind of confirms what I think happened

U.Va. does coaching hires differently. They need to be someone wealthy alums living in West End Richmond would like. (Which is partly why Dave Leitao didn’t last.) That narrows the field quite a bit. Sanchez seems to be a nice, soft spoken guy. I have nothing against him but college hoops is a ruthless business.

I suspect Carla will remove the interim label soon regardless of this season’s record, because of the suddenness of his hire. It’s a mulligan season. I’m guessing he will get 3-4 years.

I hope he does well but I’m expecting Pete Gillen results, meaning maybe getting a bid in the 2025-26 season if he can hang onto most of the current roster. But I also expect a lot of transfers out of the program when this season ends.

Remember when George Welsh retired? It can be hard to replace a legend. People are going to have to practice their patience.

If that’s true, Carla can …. Choose your nasty phrase. He’s earned the right to choose a successor

Which I think is what TB wants, with this roster, a decent coaching job, I think we get into tournament, at that point, pretty hard to not give Sanchez the job, but who knows. I also don’t think it’s ā€œthat easyā€.

Extremely different underlying reasons but big Chris Beard-Rodney Terry energy right now

No one has earned the right to choose their successor IMO. This is one of the worst things in sports, no one should do it.

I have to agree there, obviously Duke is and was a different situation but Coach K was allowed to pick his successor, as was Jay Wright and Neptune… to me, Tony has earned that right as well.

Chris Mack? Or are you talking the Chris Beard at Texas situation?

I am… sorry long night. Edited lol

I think based on what we know, if it’s an either or, I would 1000% be in favor of Sanchez over McKay. Luckily I don’t believe it’s an either or.

Not only that but if true, she would’ve cost us 2 years of Tony.

Idk why, but one of my first thoughts was about Kyle Guy. Dude retired from pro ball to come and learn from Tony…really hope he knew Tony was going to step down. (Should go without saying, but I agree with all posts above about hoping this is a non health related retirement).

Lol no worries. I knew who you were bringing up, though Chris Mack has also had some assistant things pop up (for entirely different reasons)!

I have chosen the next Mr. E. Recruit and he or she will be informed upon my death via crow.

My sources tell me that Dawn Staley will be hired next season as our new men’s basketball coach.

Yeah. We averaged 7 wins a season over the next five years and went to four bowl games.

Groh’s problem was he couldn’t maintain that success. But his first five years actually were better than Welsh’s final seasons.

I think we could see the same with hoops — a coach who can continue CTB’s success for a while, but may not have the same lasting power.
