I heard from one source, the staff or at least some of them, were told at 3pm. Others might have known earlier. Shocked. Hope he’s okay.
The suddenness is scary

Suddenness is definitely scary. And it’s Tony so I’m not worried about some type of scandal. I mean, I guess you never really know, but again, it’s Tony. So this has me very worried about it being something health related.
This screams health related. I hope he and his family are ok. JWill as interim?

Really hope its just him wanting to assure Williford or Sanchez gets a shot at the job.
I just hope he and/or his family are okay. Barring any major scandal I have nothing but love for Tony, I know the past couple seasons were frustrating for some but he is the MAN.

Tony is the best thing to ever happen to Virginia basketball (sorry, Ralph & Terry). And an absolutely admirable human being. Sending prayers to him and his family if this is a health thing (I can’t think of another cause that would be so sudden, but I hope it’s something else).
I can think of three reasons for retiring immediately, less than a month before the season: A personal issue (perhaps health), a scandal, or he got tired of fighting the university over something they wanted him to do that he thought was morally wrong.
For the sake of Tony and his family, I hope it’s the last one.
Either something health related happened in the past 24 hours and he needs to immediately retire … which seems wild to find something out and then just immediately quit. Or he’s been working through a health related issue and got some bad news in the past 24 hours. Even still, he must have been in communication with the althetic department about an ongoing condition. Otherwise it leaves the program in a horrible place.

Unfortunately it seems like there’s no “good” reason for this given the timing. Just hope it’s not a serious health issue or something that will hurt his legacy
