šŸ€ Tony Bennett Retires, Ron Sanchez to be Interim HC

Apparently twitter is saying that his wife is going thru some major health issues

His dad retired at Wisconsin three games into the 2021 season — due to burnout.

This is all a haze so don’t take anything I say as absolute truth right now. But I think Bennett is fine, doesn’t seem to be health related. We’ll see what’s said tomorrow though.

I’ve figured he was retiring soon. All the signs have been there. One source told me if they made a run this year, it would happen this spring. It’s just the timing that’s a surprise.

Ron Sanchez will be taking over, presumably as the interim head coach. And although maybe the staff didn’t know until today although I suspect some did, I think admin had known for a few days.

I hope the kids stick around. They have 30 days to transfer. They might not want to risk burning a year of earnings with an unknown

I’m not that worried about retaining our players as I think we still have a strong culture and can just promote Sanchez or Williford who have both been here a while. I’m more just anxious about Tony’s health or if there’s a bigger issue here. Also, it’s friggin Tony. He’s a legend and the sudden end of an era is hard to stomach.

He’s brought me so much joy that I can’t even begin to unpack that right now

If it’s not health or family related it’s an utterly shitty time to pull this

No yeah the programs in trouble. Down years of third place in the ACC and losing in the first round of the ACC are gone.

Man, if true that’s rough timing. He can go out on whatever terms he wants - he’s certainly earned that, but not ideal to say the least

It would have been very un-Bennett-like, but I wish he had done the farewell tour thing so he could get his flowers. But he would hate the whole thing lol, so it was always a 0% chance of happening.

Goodman reporting no health issue with Tony. He didn’t say anything about family health but seems to be Tony is fine.

Glad to hear you don’t think it’s health related, but the timing isn’t just a surprise … it’s devastating to the program and the upcoming season. Like, why do it at a time that screws over the team?

I just feel like one of them would’ve gotten the job in April if he hung it up then. Doesn’t seem like something he would do to the transfers or even Kyle who retired to join the staff.

Thank you for so many things, Tony. So so many things.

Everyone is the star of their own film, right?

I don’t think it changes much. The new scheme is in play. The coaching staff outside Tony is unchanged (and he’ll probably still watch and engage in practices).

It’s to give Sanchez or Williford their audition at the job with the new roster and schemes

Probably his mind just changed and this more safely guarantees one of them gets a shot

Also if in April, no shot we get the talent on the roster

Timing makes no sense unless something else is happening.

As much as I love TB and everything he’s done for the program, how do you walk away from this group of kids (many who are new) just a few weeks before the season? Not cool, unless something is happening that isn’t public.
