Of course! If like, TB retired, and UVa hired like Scott Drew the next day, I think people would be more optimistic than if we hired say, Ron Sanchez.
Such a similar boat as you man. I remember when we started winning ACC road games and even that felt soooo ridiculous. The level of team I had always expected would just never do that, so it was a foreign feeling. The Pitt game in particular stands out because it was a ranked road game and we won on a game winner. Thereās a video somewhere of me losing my mind at a bar, but it just felt like a game we could never win in my lifetime. And then it happened againā¦and againā¦and again, until it was the new norm and I expected to win every game as long as Tony was coaching. Itās still crazy to me how fun the 2014-2019 run was. So many good memories watching this team in my 20ās with friends at bars in DC and just being so proud to be a UVA basketball fan
I would like to ink him to an ambassador deal to keep him around and fundraising or whatever to keep him a little busy so he doesnāt get bored and start lookingā¦ I definitely donāt ever want to see him in another schoolās Q-zip.
Iām not sure why people are just default treating this like Ron is going to be the coach for the next 5 years. Heāll get his shot this year and if it goes badly - youāll get your shiny new toy to get excited about
Interpreting this as D-1, nope. Some other level? Slight maybe. Iād put something at the HS level over and above that, though. I suspect he probably really likes some elements of the job still, but he obviously never liked the bright lights elements (to my eternal dismay).
I think weāll get our shiny new toy unless Sanchez just absolutely crushes it in the next 2 years. The bar is REALLY high right now and 5th place ACC / bubble team type of program isnāt going to cut it for the donors and fanbase
And I realize that, but the year of delayed gratification on that will be kind of miserable! There is no coaching search or anything to distract us right now, there is only the pain. And I think it is okay to say that sucks!
I hope Sanchez succeeds, Iāll be watching every game and rooting for him, but every loss is going to hurt 10x worse now.
Iāll be glued to the press conference, but Iām not expecting weāll get any real answers about the timing, or the seeming abruptness.
āI talked to Laurel, and I prayed on it, and, you know, when itās time, itās time. Back when I first came here, I said I wanted to build a program that lasts, and I think weāve done that. But I also said that if ever my heart wasnāt in it anymore, Iād stop. You know, it reminds me of something my dad once told meā¦ā
And it may really be as simple as that.
Iād love to root for him at a D3. Will be heartbroken if he takes another D1 job
Chris Graham ( ) to his credit put out a good article, and he opines the timing amounts to Tony ensuring Ron Sanchez got the interim gig thus squarely getting real consideration for the permanent jobā¦ and by extension giving a big F YOU to Carla Williams who allegedly wasnāt warm to the idea and wanted to conduct a national search (which of course she would do, thatās her gig).
He claims Tony was going to retire in April, but moved it up based on recent development in re Carla,
I imagine there is some truth to this ^, although that wonāt ever truly come out, itāll be buried with conjecture about NIL, etc.
Go watch Ty Jeromeās story if you want to cry again. Obviously so much love pouring in from former players. I just hope we get to give him his flowers in some way soon. Donāt know even know what that would look like - maybe a ceremony after we name the court after him?
Get on it, Carla
Watch him pop up as coach at a local high school in 2 years when heās bored.
I voted āno,ā but I agree with HGN: If he does come back, it wonāt be for a big D1 program. I can see him coaching D3. Maybe even high school. Heck, maybe heād even take an assistant job to help out a friend. But I donāt think this is a Bronco thing where heāll say heās burned out and then be back on the sideline in two years.
āThe old Tony Bennett is retiring, the new Tony Bennett and my fast-paced offense will begin 11/6 against Campbellā¦i gotta get to practice.ā mic dropā¦Tony exits stage left
What does āsuccessā for Sanchez even look like? Wonāt everything just be a reflection of the program Tony put together?
Sanchez wonāt and shouldnāt be the next HC. I hope Carla does conduct a national search and gets a higher profile coach. Tony knew he was out in the next 1-2 years; his extension was a plea bargain he struck with Carla. Tony wants Sanchez to be the successor and AD wants to AD (and good for her - whether she is capable of a good decision is another story). Tony quit to ensure Sanchez got the season long interview. The only plausible theory in my eyes.
I think my current bar is make the tournament (hopefully win a game). If we miss the tournament we should start calling Odom, Otz, and Murray('s agents) on selection Sunday. I think it will be difficult for Carla to move on if he makes the tournament, but it may not be totally up to her so who knowsā¦
If he canāt do that with Tony laying it out for him, heās definitely not the guy.
Success for Ronchez is one hell of a season, winning over the players (they want him to stay), and the donors, and giving vibes that he might be Tony 2.0. Itās a high bar. And it would only earn him one more season at first, followed by a āprove it againā season (including recruiting season). Then he gets a long term contract.
Just a regular āyeah heās a good coachā season, and Carla is doing the nationwide search.
I disagree. Iām not necessarily sure making the tournament proves Sanchez is a good coach. I just means he didnāt wreck the car when given the keys. I hope thatās not good enough for Carla.
There is a less than 1% chance Carla does not conduct a national search, Idc what Sanchez does. THAT is her job.
There is no way she passes up a chance to be THAT center of attention. This is what AD dreams are made of. Heading a search to replace HOFer? Please.
