Also, fwiw, I was a bit more “liberal” in this thread with the tangent because we already have another offer thread where Green is and was being discussed, so the tangentially related discussion seems interesting.
I have no insight on where Green is headed, but I do know Sean Miller has had success with reeling in recruits in the past…
I wonder how much this is a result if the beginning of the 13-14 season when we started with a Malc Justin Joe lineup but Malc had trouble bringing the ball up a few times and Tony switched in London for Justin.
It seemed he was comfortable with only a single combo guard and no point guard on the court, but when the combo guard couldn’t handle it by himself, he wanted at least 2 competent ball handlers since then.
Pretty confident it’s 95% Tony trying to put the players on the floor that give him the best chance of winning each game, given what he has to work with at the time, and that so so so SO much time is wasted on message boards trying to make it anything more than that.
Looks like Kansas, Oregon, and the G-League are losing their recruiting touch… Omaha Biliew has 4 CB’s to ISU with the others as finalists. You’d think with KU’s natty last season that they’d beat out ISU for recruits
Ohh I agree. He’s always been a great recruiter. Which is why most of the time you aren’t losing to a school when it’s ISU or Xavier, it’s the coach. Otzelberger and Sean Miller are legit recruiters.
And its worth noting that, sure, UVA loses recruits to “middling” programs like Xavier and ISU, but its not like we’re losing recruits over and over to the same middling programs. We lose to middling programs that happen to have a coach that really connects with that particular player AND there’s an obvious path to playing time.
So, ISU happens to have a better path to playing time than we do AND Otzelberger and MM hit it off, so we lose MM to them. Maybe we lose someone else to Xavier. Its not that UVA is failing to recruit well, its that we aren’t recruiting at Blue Blood level AND there are good programs out there with good coaches who happen to have great playing time to sell as well. There’s nothing we can do about that except recruit really badly and create openings, which isn’t a good idea either.
What exactly does Villanova offer that we don’t (aside from whatever NIL considerations that we don’t know about)? It’s not like they play much faster than us or give early playing time. Hell, they redshirt as much or more than we do.
Very interesting this many posts and no one has brought up the FACT that we have seen a recruiting bump post title lol go look at our recruits between Dre and the title and compare that to our post title guys. The post title guys are higher rated. Obviously we’ve had some missed evaluations but we’ve gotten the guys we want more than ever.
This all day. A few misses on talent/possible cultural fit (Casey, Jabari …). You also add in that we’ve been closer with more top talent. And when you are in pursuit of top talent you often get more shenanigans which can cut against you at the last minute. Definitely has happened to us on a few occasions post-natty.
Everybody plays faster than us. Everybody!
If we would simply move from 355th up to 300 no other coaches could say we’re dead last.
And that would give us six additional possessions per game. And make everyone’s individual stats a little bit better and more palatable to recruits.
The only way to play faster is to change the Defense where we trap and gamble a few more times a game for a few minutes here and there so that the players aren’t exhausted after a defensive possession and can’t run. And don’t really wanna run for that matter because it means if there’s a fast break completed on offense they’re right back to having to play defense for another 25 seconds.
It would help if they were more aggressive looking for a good shot. Hopefully we’ll have some good shooters now and it would be easier to get off a good shot quicker.
