What are some non negotiables you’d like to see in our new coach and program?

Some ideas?

  1. offensive rebounding consistently… went last 26 minutes vs Clemson without a single one. How excited did the crowd get on that possession we had 3 chances ending with a made 3 by Dai Dai?
  2. Multiple defenses in your arsenal every single game and the willingness to use them at any point.

Great thread idea!

My list:

  • under the age of 50
  • have a cohesive system on both offense and defense
  • good / demonstrated talent acquisition ability in the new era
  • track record of winning at every previous level
  • fans of current team DEVASTATED to see you go
  • put players in the NBA or on an NBA trajectory if up-transferred
  • pace of play in top 3/4ths of the country (no more bottom quartile)
  • focus on offensive rebounding and generating deflections on defense (aggressiveness)
  • uses at least one actual big
  • margin of victory metrics prove his teams don’t “play down to opposition” and are able to “step on throats”
  • talent for positive branding
  • strong interview; actually says something more than just coachspeak
  • open and transparent with fans, offers access to the team, doesn’t operate under intense secrecy
  • does not use religion in recruiting
  • does not use religion in anything pertaining to the program
  • teams historically display highest-efficiency scoring: shots at the rim and behind the 3-pt line
  • high assist-per-point numbers, representing strong offensive system
  • higher-than-average player retention numbers
  • teams known for their hustle, grit, and “flying around”
  • success in the NCAA Tournament setting (PASE)

Whether successful in long-term or not, maintain reputation of UVA as a preferred destination for coaches.

Basically, if this guy ain’t The Guy, don’t make such a mess of it that we can’t hire the The Guy next go around.

Some other random traits….

  • Not 100% risk averse at all times.
  • Runs an offense that gets to the foul line.
  • Runs an offense that outlaws the retreat dribble.
  • Runs an offense that exploits mismatches when they’re presented.
  • Runs an offense that exploits foul trouble with the opponent.
  • Prioritizes shooting threes.
  • Maybe has a little bit of a jerk in him (if for no other reason than our fans don’t feel like they have to keep the nice guy if he’s not a winner here).

Good idea for a thread. Here’s mine.

  1. Is a man of integrity.
  2. Knows the game of basketball inside and out.
  3. Can recruit at an extremely high level.
  4. Had head coaching success at a previous stop.
  5. Played professionally, even if not at the NBA level.
  6. Taught English in high school.
  7. Member of the Basketball Hall of Fame.
  8. Won ten national titles.
  9. Passed away on June 4th, 2010.
  10. Is John Wooden.

I promise I’ll stop this bit at some point.

Has the ability to communicate a cohesive vision that is in line with the University AND the new age of college basketball.

Something along the lines of:

Yes, you’re getting paid now. We’re going to develop your game and prepare your to maximize your career earnings whether that’s in the NBA or overseas.

Basically, the Comm school for college hoops.

I love ya @DFresh11 but there are already plenty of NCAA teams out there that don’t represent UVa or its values.

Fine with paying players. Fine with different levels of academic requirements for admission. Not fine with players being students in name only.

I think that even in this brave new world, we can have a roster of good players who are also good ambassadors of the university. We should be able to walk and chew gum here.

I want guys like Justin Anderson, and not guys like Justice Winslow. Honestly, the 15 second exchange between those guys a decade ago encapsulates the very best of the CTB era. Had the likes of Duke piss scared and also showed a classy alternative to craven weasel-ism.

I dont like any of this shit other than the players getting some money while playing in college especially since they cant legally (NCAA rules) have jobs
