I have heard the same - loves the school, etc. but players want to play. I don’t see the path to playing time with returnees and additions … I haven’t heard anything - purely speculation on my part.
The name that sticks out in those early entries so far.
36% from 3 on 8 attemtps a game and 3 assists a game. Don’t know if he would be willing to be a 5-10 minute off the bench guy for us/get a head start on his graduate degree while also getting front row seats to the Reece Beekman show.
(looking for any high producing guards on meh teams/ivy league teams just looking for a better team in general/a good master program while also giving us veteran guard 3pt shooting depth off the bench. Don’t think high producing guards at power 5 programs want to come off the bench in limited minutes lol)
Oh yeah thats why you try to find someone just looking for a grad school academically and also wanting to be a part of a tournament team. Guys like this maybe have low expectations for future career in basketball/just want a new experience maybe.
Seems like a tough ask for a 5th year to sit.
If I could have redone this season, outside the obvious targets we tried to get, I would have used the 3 open scholarships on the best 3 available 3pt shooting players from the ivy league who want to do grad school at UVA or something. Not to sacrifice the lockerroom/have high character dudes on the team/have that emergency fall back 3pt shooting option. Hopefully being a super senior also means more accustomed to college ball and picking up defensive aspects as a veteran minded player. Also not to take up roster space long term wise for future recruits.
Disagree slightly. My wish list would have been two shooters and a swing forward with bounce.
Most Ivy Leaguers that I know are elitist pricks.
The extra Covid year makes Carson’s
situation very interesting. Conceivably he could graduate next year from UVA and still have multiple years of eligibility to play somewhere else. Could have the best of both worlds in a sense if he wants.
Well, that’s what almost all non-Ivy leaguers think in their little, under-educated minds - not being judgmental though.
If there’s a J Willy show or player/former player podcast coming up, I would be interested to know if players who are not getting PT are told why or what things they have to work in order to get the PT. Are some told up front that they will be practice players only until the following year? What is the mindset of the player and what are the coaches’ efforts or responsibilities in maintaining morale, or preventing against thoughts of transfer?
It must be very frustrating for players to not get PT and surely in this day and age, coaches are in tune with being supportive of all their guys and their well being. Some insight for all of us not in practices or team or personal meetings would be interesting, if not a bit therapeutic.
Think it depends on the coach and program. We discussed this during Louisville game on pod cause it can really F with a player’s identity on the team. You spend every preparing practice being the other team (someone you are not) and having no idea what your path to being on the court is.
Imma guess unless a player requests a meeting they dont get lots of clarity when season is in full swing. I do know that especially the assistants are constantly telling them to stay ready
Is there any new news around Patrick Baldwin Jr’s plans? Is he going pro? Transfer Portal? Would we be in the mix this time around if he stays in college?
He’s still projected first round. He shoulda gone to Duke. He’s like Klay Thompson: you don’t build a team around him but he’s a crucial piece on a contender
I’m pretty sure I’ve seen he’s still a projected lottery pick so he should probably just go
Last I saw he had dropped to 25th pick in the first round (vs. top 5 before season).
Maybe It depends if he truly believes he can be a top 10 pick at a power 5 school. I would take him maybe. Would have to think about it…
More seriously, this dude seems like he would be solid in the nigel johnson role.

I posted about this kid above but seems like he will be a popular target (he’s one of the biggest names so far in the portal but not saying much since portal mayhem will start up in April). Would be a nice fill in at the 3.
Moves like Joe Harris and a lot of his movements off screen should translate well to mover blocker (but I hope we dont run that next season)

It’s gonna be awkward for a little while. I expect we’ll hear UVA tied to transfers in the few weeks but until our own stay/go decisions are made they won’t really pursue anyone. Tracking the portal might be a waste of time for fans, or not haha
Is there a deadline internal or in general to declare free agency? Imagine its not until after tbe tourney
They have to enter their name by May 1st to be eligible for for the one-time waiver.
