The commissioner of one of my FF leagues is also the treasurer and he sent the winner money to what he thought was the winner’s Venmo. But it was some other guy with the same name.
No idea how he resolved it or if it just turned out to be a couple hundred buck mistake. But yeah, make sure you send money to who you’re intending to send it to.
I once sent money to someone I didn’t know by accident. When I figured it out (w/in a day), I requested that he send it back. He declined the request.

It’s a common scam tactic. Criminal X steals Y’s credit card, sends money to random person Z. X sends message to Z saying it was a mistaken transaction and please send back the money. Z sends money to X. Y figures out their credit card was stolen and reports it to the bank. Bank tells Venmo to reverse all charges post-theft. Venmo takes money back from Z and gives it to bank. Now Z is out whatever money they sent to X with no recourse because it was a legit transaction.
Z should always leave the money in the account and tell X to take it up with Venmo. If X is persistent enough, Venmo will take the money out of Z’s account and reverse the transaction.
Z should never send their own money to X. They’ll never see that money again.
