Yeah. Agreed. The good thing is they will be playing in Copa America next summer against the likes of Brazil, Argentina, etc.
Lol
Just realized this Concaf game im watching happened live… last night… awkward.
Jusr saw the 2nd us goal
I won’t ruin the ending for you. Suffice it to say our best team isn’t playing in the Gold Cup. Those guys boatraced Mexico and Canada to win the Nations League title 3 weeks or so ago and were given time off before their European seasons start.
Very true about pretty much all of the A team getting time off. Smart move and allows for some younger players to get some run (but don’t get me started on Aaron Long…) - really wish Paredes was included on the team as I think he has a lot potential but oh well.
Good on Turner to ask to stay with the team for both competitions given he didn’t get much run last year at Arsenal. I think based on performances like last night and throughout Nations League, he is the clear GK1 for the US team.
Yeah Paredes would have been good as this team is short on wingers and he barely got to play in the U20 World Cup as wasn’t released until knockout round. Should have let Mexico have Zendejas as he hasn’t shown anything even against the T&T’s and St Kitts and Nevis’ of the world yet continues to start over Cade Cowell which is laughable. Cade better be starting against Panama Wednesday. Marlon Fossey at RB should have been on this roster as well as he had a good season in Belgium and who needs to see Yedlin anymore. Here’s hoping Long is riding pine Wednesday as he really shouldn’t be on this roster as he has lost his only good attribute which was his pace.
Soccer. It’s better than baseball.
Probably more C team than B team (Turner excepted), as the entire B team (and some of the A team, which pulled some B team type of guys into the CNL) is either injured or in an unsettled club situation that prompted the coaching staff to do them a solid and not call them up so they could fight for playing time (or a transfer).
I do enjoy seeing this group even though they are not too choice. It’s nice seeing faces that had promise a few years ago that we haven’t seen in a bit plus young guys. You can tell that it means a lot to them. Crazy game the other night and looking forward to Wednesday.
The Turner thing is interesting. At what point does he need to be first choice at club level? Arsenal is good and there could always be an injury, but do you think if he doesn’t play this year he looks to go on loan or a transfer? He’s definitely a quality player.
Yea I think he sticks it out one more year at Arsenal. If he doesn’t get more time he goes out on loan before 24/25.
The consensus seems to be that he’ll stay at Arsenal this season and then most likely be sold next summer if he doesn’t play much. Everyone acknowledges Turner is a great shot stopper but while he’s improved a lot with his feet, he’s still nowhere near the level of top modern keepers. Unfortunately that’s a crucial element to how Arsenal play so I can’t see him getting a ton of playing time outside of the domestic cups. He won’t even get much playing time in Europe this season as I’d expect Ramsdale to play most of the Champions League minutes.
He definitely needs to be starting at club level heading into the 2026 WC, but I imagine there will be a lot of clubs in the next tier down that he could start for. I could see him at a mid-table Premier League team that doesn’t play a style requiring its keeper to be an elite passer.
You know soccer. I am of the opinion that US cant compete for real as long as we are only playing Concacaf (whatever that is). Playing teams like Canada Panama Nevis El Slavador etc is ugly soccer and lotta times you are playing just to not get hurt instead of improving as a squad
Exactly, which makes me think he definitely needs to find a club after this season. I was hoping he’d find one earlier as I don’t see him replacing Ramsdale. I think they just gave Ramsdale a new contract too.
I tend to agree. To put it in college basketball terms, our best case scenario is being the Gonzaga of international soccer. We can dominate our league and maybe make some deep runs in the big tournament but it will be exceedingly difficult - maybe impossible - to win the whole thing. Of course, only eight countries (all of them in Europe or South America) have won the World Cup ever so we’d still be in some good company.
Crazy how are best team yet was in the late 90s (I think) with Claudio and those guys when we got cheated somewhat vs Germany
Upon review it was 2002 in Korea- Japan
Tottenham would be a fun landing spot (even without the whole rivalry with Arsenal thing); both of their GKs are old and stopped shots poorly last season.
They just bought a new keeper from Italy (who’s supposedly very good with his feet) so I don’t think that will be an option. Also, Tottenham are shit. I wouldn’t wish that on Matty.
Have to hope the Copa invite becomes permanent. Maybe it goes down to 4 concacaf teams and 2 invites moving forward? I don’t think conembol for actual qualifying makes a ton of sense due to geography.
Also, isn’t the 2025 gold cup going to be a mini federations cup? Inviting one team from each federation?
Agree…a huge fan of Sonny here…I appreciate his loyalty, but they won’t go anywhere anytime soon
