The COnfederation of North, Central America and Caribbean Association Football
I was at my local pub when I lived in England circa 2005-2006… and I got in a heated arguments with one of the regulars that I posited… “If every American youth athlete was required to try soccer/football before any other sport, then the rest of the world would never win anything.”
The Brit counter argued that England invented the game and would always kick the US’s ass… he also argued that it didn’t matter how many US athletes you dedicated to soccer… the US would still be sh!t.
I countered that if you only took the elite NBA PGs, NFL cornerbacks & MLB catchers without touching any other positions, we would still kick everyone’s ass.
He almost punched me. LOL!
And just take a power forward and put em in goal. Or maybe a tight end
Lebron as a striker…forget about it…I’ve always said the same thing to my friends…I’m not sure I would say it in a pub in London though…lol
I didn’t… it was North of Oxford… about 10 miles. ![]()
Imagine Barry Sanders grew up in Brasil playing only soccer…
Or AI, Mugsy, Ja, Warrick Dunn, Cheetah, Megatron, CJ2K, DJax….
Ha. All of em
I will say we underestimate the athletecism of soccer guys. However. None of them can jump. Not one
Edit: Gio Reyna can jump
Big ones dude
Micah Parsons as a center back…
To be fair, soccer is a very different game where athleticism matters but isn’t as important as spacial awareness and split second decision making. After all, Messi is the GOAT and he’s 5’6" in heels and probably couldn’t bench press the bar.
To be clear, I agree that if soccer were the most popular sport in America we’d have the best national team. I’m just saying it wouldn’t necessarily be the guys you think who would be our best players.
Age old story the US has the best athletes in the world just a matter of providing all the resources at an early enough age to make a difference. If the US as a society puts it’s efforts into any sport it will dominate
I know next to nothing about soccer, but while I’m sure it’s true that if the US cared more about soccer, we’d be better at soccer, that’s sort of true of every nation. Then success at a sport is pretty much a function of (1) how much your country cares, (2) population, and (3) GDP per capita.
I guess this boils down to whether you think there’s something special about US athletes over and above our population and relative high nutrition levels.
I’m sure if you redshirted yourself from commenting on soccer, and then learned something about soccer, you’d know more than me, which is only that soccer is better than baseball. And probably American football too.
McKennie can get jump up there pretty high as well over taller defenders.
Edit: Fun Fact: McKennie was committed to UVA before deciding to go straight to Europe after high school.
