As mentioned in the offseason thread, no Evan Blanco for at least this weekend series. Should be available next weekend, but I’m skeptical of that being in an extended starter role (could see him on a strict pitch count). Also no Matt Augustin for our bullpen.

Rotation for this weekend is Jay Woolfolk/Bryson Moore/Tomas Valincius.

Little background on Michigan, nothing super in depth.

They’re coming off a 2024 season where they went 32-28 (14-10), finished 5th in the B1G and didn’t make the NCAA tournament. This year they’re projected by D1 to once again finish 5th in the conference but make the field of 64 as a regional 3 seed (which means they’d be on the bubble). They added a good amount of transfers this offseason along with returning their top utility guy Mitch Voit, who hit .292 with 14 HR’s and 42 RBI’s last season and served as one of his team’s starting pitchers (don’t think he’s pitching this year due to an arm injury). Overall they identify as a veteran group with guys who should be pretty good in the field and have some pop in the middle of their order. It’s a solid opening day test for our pitching staff.

Starting pitcher for Michigan tomorrow is projected to be Sophomore RHP Dylan Vigue.

Last year in his freshman campaign he went 2-4 with a 7.90 ERA in 15 appearances that included 11 starts. In 54.2 IP he gave up 65 hits, 44 walks and had 40 K’s. But he’s coming into this season with quite a bit of hype as a draft eligible 2nd year player who had a very solid summer in the Cape Cod league. He’s a pretty big framed righty at 6’3, 220 and features a mid 90’s sinker along with a cutter/slider combo on the back end. He’s ranked as the 74th best Starting Pitcher by D1, two spots higher than Woolfolk, and if he’s locating then he can be very tough to deal with. But that’s the question, will he be able to keep the momentum he built in the summer and stave off the massive issue he had with walks last season. We will see.

Any expectations for Aiden Harris this year, or is he more of a “play sparingly this year to get ready for a potential starring role next year” kind of guy?

I think it’ll be the latter. He’ll get AB’s here and there during blowouts and/or midweek games but wouldn’t expect to see him as an everyday starter unless someone gets hurt or he becomes too productive to leave out of the order, a la Kyle Teel in 2021.

At least from what I saw he’s still a bit of a work in progress, and could benefit from another full offseason with KMac. Potential is through the roof though and he should be a starter next year.

My best guess on the lineup tomorrow is:

  1. Eric Becker, SS
  2. Henry Godbout, 2B
  3. Chris Arroyo, 1B
  4. Henry Ford, RF
  5. Harrison Didawick, LF
  6. Jacob Ference, C
  7. Aidan Teel, CF/DH
  8. Luke Hanson, 3B
  9. James Nunnallee, CF/DH

Our lineup. Most interesting point to me is Didawick DHing, though not super surprising when you factor in his throwing troubles.

That lineup is genuinely terrifying

We’re about to get underway. Hoos are the road team today.

Top of the 1st, RHP Dylan Vigue starts on the mound for Michigan. SS Eric Becker leads off for the HOOS.

  • Becker grounds one to Voit at 2nd. He goes into a slide to make the grab and throw to first for the out. One down for 2B Henry Godbout.
  • Godbout flies one to shallow CF. Kim goes into a running slide but can’t make the catch. Godbout reaches, one on and one down for RF Henry Ford.
  • Ford chops one to Caruso at 3rd. The only play is to 1st, he makes the throw for the out. Godbout moves up a base, runner on 2nd and two down for 1B Chris Arroyo.
  • Arroyo hits a hard grounder back to Vigue on the mound who tosses over to 1st for the out to end the frame.

Middle of the 1st, game is scoreless.

Bottom of the 1st, RHP Jay Woolfolk starts on the mound for the HOOS. CF Jonathan Kim leads off for Michigan.

  • Kim K’s (1) swinging. One down for SS Benny Casillas.
  • Casillas on 0-2 flares a base hit into RCF. One on and one down for 1B Jeter Ybarra.
  • Casillas takes 2nd on a ball Ference loses track of in the dirt. Runner on 2nd and one down now for Ybarra, 3-1 count.
  • Ybarra works a walk. 3-1 pitch was a strike but oh well. Two on and one down for 2B Mitch Voit.
  • Voit on the first pitch rips a double off the RF wall. One run scores as the runners got held up a bit, 1-0 Michigan. Runners on 2nd and 3rd, one down for DH Colby Turner.
  • DD out for a chat with Woolfolk to settle him down. 1st inning troubles are no stranger to Jay, just needs to find his groove.
  • Turner grounds one to Becker at short. The only play is to 1st, throw is made for the out. Ybarra scores from 3rd, 2-0 Michigan. Runner on 2nd, two down for C Matt Spear.
  • Spear grounds out to Godbout at 2nd to end the inning.

Heading into the 2nd, Michigan now leads 2-0. Not the best start but a lot of baseball left to be played.

ESPN off to a good start with inaccurate information on outs and count

Top of the 2nd, Vigue on the mound for Michigan. C Jacob Ference to lead off for the HOOS.

  • Ference on the first pitch is plunked. One on and nobody down for DH Harrison Didawick.
  • Didawick hits a dribbler in front of the plate. Spear is able to field it and throw to 1st for the out. Ference moves up a base, runner on 2nd and one down for 3B Luke Hanson.
  • Hanson flies out to Hamchuk in LF. Runner on 2nd and two down for CF Aidan Teel.
  • Teel on the first pitch lines a base hit into LF. It’s hard so hard that Ference isn’t able to score, runners on the corners and two down for LF James Nunnallee.
  • Nunnallee on the first pitch chops out to Casillas at short to end the frame.

Middle of the 2nd, still 2-0 Michigan.

I can’t be sure since it was in Spanish, but I’m pretty sure I just watched an ad for fentanyl

Bottom of the 2nd, Woolfolk on the mound for the HOOS. LF Robbie Hamchuk to lead off for Michigan.

  • Broadcast has missed the first pitch every half inning so far.
  • Hamchuk on a full count pops out to Arroyo in foul ground. One down for 3B Cole Caruso.
  • Caruso K’s (2) swinging chasing an outside fastball. Two down for RF AJ Rausch.
  • Rausch on a full count flies out to Ford in RF to end the inning.

Heading into the 3rd, Michigan leads 2-0.
