⚾ UVA Baseball Game Thread 15-21 April (ODU, GMU, GT Series)

Eh, wouldn’t say they’re not good. They’re decent, fringe tourney team who has been playing good baseball recently. But I agree we haven’t had a great approach at the plate so far.

Bottom of the 6th, Finateri still on the mound for GT. Ford to lead off for the HOOS.

  • Ford K’s swinging on three pitches. We keep chasing balls up in our eyes. One down for Didawick.
  • Didawick grounds out to 1st unassisted. Two down for Ference.
  • Ference lines a base hit into LF. One on and two down for Stephan.
  • Stephan lines a base hit into LCF. Two on and two down for Hanson.
  • Hanson jams a base hit into RCF against the shift. Ference tries to score but is gunned down at the plate on a throw from Burress, wasn’t close. That ends the inning. UGH.

Heading into the 7th, GT leads 7-0.

Top of the 7th, RHP Cullen McKay takes over on the mound for the HOOS. Jones to lead off for GT.

  • Jones grounds out to GOF at short. One down for Giesler.
  • Giesler on the next pitch also grounds out to GOF at short. Two down for Green.
  • Green flies out to Didawick in CF to end the frame.

7th inning stretch time, GT leads 7-0. Got nine outs to work with, let’s get the bats going.

Bottom of the 7th, Finateri still on the mound for GT. Becker to lead off for the HOOS.

  • Becker grounds out to 2B in the shift. One down for GOF.
  • GOF hits a dribbler to the right side of the infield. Finateri fields it and throws to 1st, but hits GOF on the back. GOF is called out by the ump for apparently being inside of the line. There will be a review, this dumb rule has reared its head against us before.
  • Call confirmed, GOF is out. Hate that rule so much. Two down for Whalen.
  • Whalen on a full count lines a base hit up the middle past the glove of Kerce. One on and two down for Anderson.
  • Another stoppage in play as the entire GT dugout believes the first pitch to Anderson was a foul tip and not a ball. But the call will stand, 1-0 count.
  • Mound visit for GT.
  • Anderson rips a base hit into RF past the shift. Whalen goes 1st to 3rd, runners on the corners and two down for Ford.
  • Another mound visit for GT. Pitching change incoming. RHP Ben King takes over on the mound for the Yellow Jackets.
  • Ball in the dirt moves EA up to 2nd. 2nd and 3rd, two down now for Ford. 2-0 count.
  • Ford on a full count draws a walk. Bases loaded and two down for Didawick.
  • Didawick hits a bouncer on the middle of the infield. It goes right over King’s head and into no man’s land, everyone is safe. Whalen scores, 7-1 GT. Bases still loaded and two down for Ference.
  • Ference on the next pitch hits a grounder to short. It’s fielded cleanly but the throw to 1st is high and Ference avoids the tag, everyone is safe. Anderson scores, 7-2 GT. Bases loaded and two down for Stephan.
  • Stephan hits a high chopper to 2nd in the shift. The throw is made to 1st just in time to end the inning, thought Stephan beat it out but no review so I guess not.

Heading into the 8th, GT now leads 7-2.

Top of the 8th, McKay still on the mound for the HOOS. Kerce to lead off for GT.

  • Kerce lines a base hit back up the middle into CF. One on and nobody down for Jaros.
  • Jaros rips a double down the LF line. Kerce scores all the way from 1st, 8-2 GT. Runner on 2nd and nobody down for Lackey.
  • Lackey pokes a base hit into CF. Jaros scores, 9-2 GT. All these two strike hits are so frustrating. One on and nobody down for Yunger.
  • Yunger flies out to Whalen in RF. One on and one down for Burress.
  • Burress draws a walk. Two on and one down for Ellis.
  • Mound visit for UVA, BOC out for a chat. Pitching change incoming. LHP Freddy Beruvides Jr. takes over on the mound for the HOOS.
  • Ellis walks. Bases loaded and one down for Jones.
  • Jones hits a no doubt grand slam halfway up the LF bleachers. 13-2 GT. Nobody on and one down for Giesler.
  • Giesler hits a slow grounder to Becker who charges in to field it and underhand tosses to 1st for the out. Two down for Green.
  • Green flies out to Becker in shallow LCF to end the frame.

Middle of the 8th, GT now leads 13-2. If we don’t get two here that’s the slaughter rule.

Love these boys but this pitching staff is pretty bad/injured.

It’s rough, we’ve got a title contending offense but the pitching is the worst I’ve seen in the BOC era. Sad to think about whether or not things would be significantly better if we had Hodges and O’Conner available, but regardless what we do have isn’t good.

Bottom of the 8th, RHP Carson Ballard takes over on the mound for GT. Hanson to lead off for the HOOS.

  • Hanson draws a walk. One on and nobody down for Becker.
  • Wild pitch moves Hanson up a base. Runner on 2nd and nobody down now for Becker, 2-0 count.
  • Becker walks. Two on and nobody down for GOF.
  • Mound visit for GT.
  • GOF flies out to CF. Two on and one down for Whalen.
  • Whalen grounds into a 6-4-3 double play to end it.

GT slaughter rules UVA 13-2 in eight innings to improve to 23-13 (8-8) on the season. Hoos fall to 29-10 (11-8).

We’ll see you tomorrow at 4PM in what I hope is a far more competitive game.

Worst team ERA since 2002. It’s not great.

Lineup is great (usually).

That’s one where you just erase it from your memory and reset. Hopefully it’s taken as a bit of a wakeup call, we haven’t played great baseball so far this week and need to pick up the slack.

Game two and we need a big bounce back performance.

Saucke and Godbout both back in the lineup, very good to see. Didawick moves down to 6th after his recent struggles at the plate.

We’re about to get underway.

Top of the 1st, LHP Owen Coady starts on the mound for the HOOS. LF Trey Yunger leads off for GT.

  • Yunger on the first pitch grounds out to GOF at short. One down for CF Drew Burress.
  • Burress on a full count draws a walk. Should’ve been a K looking. One on and one down for C Matthew Ellis.
  • Ellis on a full count draws a walk. Another K looking missed, everyone was surprised that it was ball 4. Two on and one down for P Cam Jones.
  • Jones on the next pitch pops out to GOF at short. Two on and two down for 1B John Giesler.
  • Giesler flies out to Saucke in RF to end the frame.

Middle of the 1st, game is scoreless.

Heading into the 2nd, game is scoreless.

Top of the 2nd, Coady on the mound for the HOOS. SS Payton Green to lead off for GT.

  • Green on the first pitch rips one into the LCF gap for a double. Runner on 2nd and nobody down for RF Parker Brosius.
  • Passed ball moves Green up a base. Runner on 3rd and nobody down now for Brosius, 2-0 count.
  • Brosius flies out to Saucke in shallow RF. Green holds, and it’s a good idea as Saucke fires a cannon home that would’ve got him easily. Runner on 3rd and one down for 2B Carson Kerce.
  • Kerce flies out to Saucke in deep RCF on the warning track. No chance to throw him out on that one, Green scores from 3rd. 1-0 GT. Nobody on and two down for 3B Ryan Jaros.
  • Jaros walks. One on and two down for Yunger.
  • Mound visit for UVA, DD out for a chat as Coady falls behind 2-0.
  • Yunger flies out to Didawick in LF to end the frame.

Middle of the 2nd, GT now leads 1-0.

Bottom of the 2nd, Jones on the mound for GT. DH Jacob Ference leads off for the HOOS.

  • Ference BLASTS a solo shot off of the LCF clubhouse. His 11th of the season ties this game at 1 apiece. Nobody on and none down for C Ethan Anderson.
  • Anderson flies out to Burress in deep CF on the warning track. One down for LF Harrison Didawick.
  • Didawick pops out to Kerce in shallow CF. Two down for 2B Henry Godbout.

Yeah my b, Ference not Ford. Sometimes I type the wrong name without even thinking lol.

He does BLAST a lot of homers though. Easy mistake to make.

Heading into the 4th, GT still leads 2-1. Not sure about the exact number but we’ve left a metric fuckload of baserunners stranded so far this series.

  • GOF hits a hard grounder up the middle, but GT is shifted perfectly and Kerce is able to field it and throw to 1st for the out. That ends the inning.

Heading into the 6th, GT leads 2-1. Three hard hit balls that inning, that’s the game of baseball sometimes.

  • Brosius flies out to Whalen in CF. Two down for Kerce.
  • Kerce on 0-2 is HBP, but he went around with his swing so he’s called out on strikes. There’s gonna be a review as Kerce and the GT dugout think it hit his bat.
