⚾ UVA Baseball Game Thread 15-21 April (ODU, GMU, GT Series)

Hoos are allegedly down 7-1 to ODU currently in the bottom of the 6th inning. I have no way of verifying this as there’s no broadcast.

If you have information on the whereabouts or happenings of this baseball game feel free to leave a message.

The supposed live stats are here if anyone is interested: StatBroadcast Live Stat Feed

Hoos go down 7-4 to ODU in Norfolk. Had a two out rally in the 9th and got the tying run to the plate, but Anderson struck out to end it.

We now sit at 28-9 (11-7) on the season after losing our first midweek game since April 19th, 2022.

Appears that our 757 Hoos struggled mightily in front of the hometown fans judging by the alleged box score.

Allegedly. There’s a chance this game never even happened. I mean I haven’t seen any of it, and if we get enough people to say it didn’t take place then maybe it’ll gain some traction.

I was there. It totally sucked.
Key play: GOF had an UGLY error with a bad throw to first early in the game. That costed us big time. Ethan also had to deep shots but the wind was blowing in and kept them in the park. Without the wind and that error, we likely pull it out even while not hitting well.

Gonna copy/paste a post I made on the 247 board just to keep people here in the loop.

Future Stars updated their top 400 prospects list yesterday with some notable movement for UVA players/recruits. Here’s a link to the list: 2024 MLB Draft: Top 400 Prospects - Future Stars Series

And here’s a link to our 2024 PG commits page: Virginia - Perfect Game Baseball Player College Commitments

Of importance to us…

29: Caleb Bonemer SS (HS)
61: Griff O’Ferrall SS
76: Trey Gregory-Alford RHP (HS)
87: Bryce Meccage RHP (HS, up 101 spots)
88: Ethan Anderson C/1B
91: Casey Saucke 3B
129: Harrison Didawick OF (up 50 spots)
145: James Nunnallee OF (HS, up 140 spots)
160: Luke Dickerson 2B/OF (HS, up 141 spots)
165: Aiden Harris 3B (HS)
240: William Kirk LHP (HS, up 29 spots)
274: Jay Woolfolk RHP
299: Tomas Valincius LHP (HS)

I have no idea how reputable this site is when it comes to projecting prospects, but there’s a chance our recruiting class gets gutted this year lol. We’re already expected to lose Bonemer/Harris/TGA, but losing guys like Meccage, Nunnallee, and Dickerson on top of that would be brutal. Also seems like Didawick is playing himself into top 5 round consideration, he would have one more year of leverage if he decides to come back but we’ll see if that happens.

Hoos are up 10-4 over George Mason in the bottom of the 7th.

I honestly forgot there was a game tonight, but wouldn’t have been able to do PBP anyway. Had to go out of town after work.

We got baseball here in about 10 minutes. No Saucke today, not 100% sure why but he did come up limping a little bit after trying to rob a HR in the GMU game so wonder if it’s connected to that. 247 board saying he was warming up so might just be a precaution. Also still no Godbout but have read that he’s close to returning.

We’re about to get underway.

Top of the 1st, LHP Evan Blanco starts on the mound for the HOOS. LF Trey Yunger to lead off for GT.

  • Yunger grounds out to Ford unassisted at 1st. One down for CF Drew Burress. He is GT’s freshman phenom.
  • Burress K’s (1) looking. Two down for DH Matthew Ellis.
  • Ellis on a full count draws a walk. One on and two down for RF Cam Jones.
  • Jones flies out to Didawick in LCF to end the frame.

Middle of the 1st, game is scoreless.

What exactly happened to godbout? Was it that HBP?

Not 100% sure, would assume it was a lingering injury from that HBP though.

Bottom of the 1st, RHP Aeden Finateri starts on the mound for GT. SS Griff O’Ferrall to lead off for the HOOS.

  • GOF K’s swinging. One down for RF Bobby Whalen.
  • Looks like it’s gonna be a big strike zone today.
  • Whalen K’s looking. Looked outside but like I said, seems to be a wide zone. Two down for C Ethan Anderson.
  • Anderson on the next pitch rips a double the other way off the LF wall. Runner on 2nd and two down for 1B Henry Ford.
  • Ford on the next pitch lines one off the glove of the 1B Giesler. It ends up on the infield, everyone is safe. Runners on the corners and two down for CF Harrison Didawick.
  • Didawick K’s swinging to end the inning. Missed opportunity.

Heading into the 2nd, game is still scoreless.

Top of the 2nd, Blanco on the mound for the HOOS. 1B John Giesler to lead off for GT.

  • Giesler grounds out to Hanson at 3rd. One down for SS Payton Green.
  • Green on a full count flies out to Didawick in CF. Two down for 2B Carson Kerce.
  • Kerce lines out to Didawick in CF to end the frame.

Middle of the 2nd, game is still scoreless.

Bottom of the 2nd, Finateri on the mound for GT. DH Jacob Ference to lead off for the HOOS.

  • Ference loops a base hit into CF. One on and nobody down for LF Anthony Stephan.
  • Ference gets gunned down trying to steal 2nd. Looked like a pitch out and the play wasn’t even close. Nobody on and one down for Stephan, 2-2 count.
  • Stephan on the next pitch K’s swinging on high heat. Two down for 3B Luke Hanson.
  • Hanson lines a base hit into CF. One on and two down for 2B Eric Becker.
  • Becker sneaks a base hit into the shift for an infield single. Hanson overruns the bag and almost gets tagged out retreating back to 2nd. Two on and two down for GOF.
  • GOF on the next pitch grounds out to Green at short to end the inning.

Heading into the 3rd, game is still scoreless.

Top of the 3rd, Blanco on the mound for the HOOS. 3B Ryan Jaros to lead off for GT.

  • Jaros grounds a base hit up the middle past GOF. One on and nobody down for C Vahn Lackey.
  • Lackey lays a bunt down the 1B line. Ford fields it and makes the tag for the out, Jaros moves up a base. Runner on 2nd and one down for Yunger.
  • Yunger on the next pitch lines a base hit into RF. Jaros scores, 1-0 GT. One on and one down for Burress.
  • Burress hits a cue shot base hit against the shift into RF. Would’ve been a tailor made DP otherwise. Yunger goes 1st to 3rd, runners on the corners and one down for Ellis.
  • Mound visit for UVA, DD out for a chat.
  • Ellis grounds a base hit against the shift into CF. Would’ve been another tailor made DP if we were aligned normally. Yunger scores, 2-0 GT. Two on and one down for Jones.
  • Jones draws a walk. Outside corner inexplicably no longer being called. Bases loaded and one down for Giesler.
  • Giesler rips a double into the LCF gap. That clears the bases, 5-0 GT. Runner on 2nd and one down for Green.
  • Green lays down a surprise bunt. It’s Blanco’s ball but Ford also comes in to field it meaning there’s no one to cover 1st. Green reaches, Giesler moves up a base. Runners on the corners and one down for Kerce.
  • Kerce lays down another bunt to the left side of the infield. Hanson charges into field it, thinks about going home but gets the safe out at 1st instead. Giesler scores, 6-0 GT. Runner on 2nd and two down for Jaros.
  • Jaros flies out to Whalen in RF to mercifully end the frame.

Middle of the 3rd, GT now leads 6-0. Not ideal but hey we’ve been here before lol.

Bottom of the 3rd, Finateri on the mound for GT. Whalen to lead off for the HOOS.

  • Whalen on a full count lines a base hit into RF. One on and nobody down for Anderson.
  • Anderson K’s looking. One on and one down for Ford.
  • Ford flies out to Burress in CF. One on and two down for Didawick.
  • Didawick on the next pitch flies out to Jones in deep RF on the warning track. Thought it was gone off the bat but that ends the inning.

Heading into the 4th, GT leads 6-0.

Top of the 4th, Blanco still on the mound for the HOOS. Lackey to lead off for GT.

  • Lackey lines out to Stephan in LF. One down for Yunger.
  • Yunger grounds out to Hanson at 3rd. Two down for Burress.
  • Burress on a full count works a walk. One on and two down for Ellis.
  • Ellis flies out to Didawick in LCF to end the frame.

Middle of the 4th, GT leads 6-0.

Bottom of the 4th, Finateri still on the mound for GT. Ference to lead off for the HOOS.

  • Ference lines out to Jones in RF. One down for Stephan.
  • Stephan flies out to Burress in shallow CF. Two down for Hanson.
  • Hanson K’s swinging on three pitches to end the inning. Ugly AB.

Heading into the 5th, GT leads 6-0.

Top of the 5th, Blanco still on the mound for the HOOS. Jones to lead off for GT.

  • Jones lines a base hit into LF. One on and nobody down for Giesler.
  • Giesler flies out to Didawick in CF. One on and one down for Green.
  • Green K’s (2) swinging. One on and two down for Kerce.
  • Jones steals 2nd. He was not a fan of how many times we threw over to 1st. Runner on 2nd and two down for Kerce now, 1-0 count.
  • Kerce K’s (3) swinging to end the frame.

Middle of the 5th, GT leads 6-0.

Bottom of the 5th, Finateri still on the mound for GT. Becker to lead off for the HOOS.

  • Becker K’s swinging. One down for GOF.
  • GOF lines a base hit into LF. One on and one down for Whalen.
  • Whalen on the next pitch flies out to Burress in LCF. One on and two down for Anderson.
  • Anderson on the next pitch flies out to Jones in deep RF on the warning track. Another one that I thought was gone off the bat, not sure if the wind is blowing in, but that ends the inning.

Heading into the 6th, GT leads 6-0.

Top of the 6th, RHP Ryan Osinski takes over on the mound for the HOOS. Jaros to lead off for GT.

  • Jaros flies out to Didawick in in deep CF in front of the warning track. One down for Lackey.
  • Lackey bounces one back to Osinski who throws over to 1st for the out. Two down for Yunger.
  • Yunger on a full count lines a base hit into LF. Osinski got squeezed on the 1-2 and 2-2 pitches, then Yunger fouled off a couple good pitches to spoil. One on and two down for Burress.
  • Outside corner has just completely disappeared at times. Really bad strike zone from this ump.
  • Yunger steals 2nd. Runner on 2nd and two down now for Burress, 1-2 count.
  • Ugh. Burress hits a hard grounder to GOF that eats him up. He’s able to gather it and throw to 1st, but it’s low and Ford can’t pick it. It gets past him, Yunger comes around to score from 2nd, 7-0 GT. One on and two down for Ellis.
  • Burress steals 2nd on a ball in the dirt. Runner on 2nd and two down now for Ellis, 1-2 count.
  • Ellis flies out to Stephan in LCF to end a frustrating frame.

Middle of the 6th, GT now leads 7-0.

Man, this is not a good GT team. But we left guys on early on, and they took advantage when they had men in scoring position.

Seems like our hitters don’t have much patience. Saucke is a huge part of that lineup though.
