In one game much less a series.
didn’t watch but about 3 innings of the series. So, question is why the strange outcome? That is, struggling against a team with poor record, getting so few runs, and getting great pitching. Is BC just a team with good pitching and poor hitting that can’t score enough runs for their pitchers, or did our pitchers just step up this week?
Pitching stepped up relative to what we’ve been getting. Still created traffic on the base path with walks and hit batters. But, again, better.
The defense was much better and more on par with expectations. Turned some double plays which we hadn’t done a lot of lately. Teel made what was likely a game-saving Superman catch in the bottom of the 8th with the bases loaded in game 2. Whalen made a fantastic full dive catch yesterday to stop a rally.
Infield defense was rock solid games 2 and 3. Ranged well and made the plays they should make. We’d also been beat on the shift by good hitting last week and weekend. We played that better this series. The bats were a bit cold for sure. Ford, Saucke, and Didawick had subpar series for them. Bottom of the order was on point yesterday with base hits and 4 runs scored (2 each for Godbout and Hansen). Granted, BC was 7-14 in the ACC coming into the series And were swept last weekend by ND.
If Savino can keep recovering and stay healthy, and work his way into a reliable weekend starter that would be huge. Blanco has been touched up a bit the last two weekends but he’s still the most reliable starter. McKay was throwing gas out of the pen. Woolfolk’s stuff looked good again (touching 94-95). Really Hungate is the likely pitching MVP of the weekend. Long relief Friday and another multi-inning game yesterday to close out both games. Teel looked better than he has in a while as well…
Hopefully the pitching is settling in a bit (finally) and the bats can stay hot at the same time going forward. Time will tell.
