No, I get it. I too was wondering why he was playing substantial minutes – especially since he was not being aggressive offensively. It seems the coaching staff has urged him to hunt his shot more, and it just happened to be that game where he asserted himself more. I think – only after confirming it in person – that he is doing a lot and is going to be a more complete package as the season progresses.
Until Rohde leads us back down 20 to a Big10 opponent with 18 points I am staying on the Taine Train!!
Po
I’m always a proponent of rotations that fit.
I think Taine could start with the other 4 being Reece, Isaac, Dunn and Groves.
Then bring Rohde in when Reece takes a break. Rohde and Gertrude coming in together off the bench can work really well.
And any of Taine Rohde and Bond at the 3 works.
The problem with starting Groves over Buchanan is it immediately pushes either Buchanan or Minor out of the rotation.
Hard to do though if Dunn and Reece have zero gravity at the arc.
Intangibles is a great word sometimes and you used it perfectly here for how I see it being used. But also Hav is saying IF Taine got 30 minutes out of the box would be also have intangibles
It is a good discussion and I agree that Taine hasnt shown the ball handling side of things that we think Rohde has
Ha. Yes. I would specifically only challenge Reece!! On game winning 3 pointers. And I am not joking
I get it, Fresh. I guess it made a big impression on me when I could sit back and realize how much the offense is running through Rohde; he and Reece seem to have a good feel for running the offense. I just haven’t seen that from Taine, but that certainly doesn’t mean he couldn’t fill that role if he played more.
Yea and as you said seeing it in person is much different. You can see better who the players look for to keep the offense flowing etc
I pull for Taine and think he can be a solid contributor, but to me this is a case where the metrics don’t begin to show everything Rohde brings to the table. He has played solid defense, has a great touch and vision, and a key to the success of the outside triangle of late.
Offensive schemes and pairings for sure has become huuuge
95% of Taine’s scoring has come when the game is already over.
I think the last two games with a scheme that fits Rohde’s strengths is more reflective of what he can contribute to this team this year on top of also not being near his ceiling of where he could be at the end of year 4 at UVA down the road.
I just hope if we rest Reece we see the Gertrude Rohde McKneely guard trio that I want to start next year/play pg by committee, and use Gertrude’s speed to break press.
He didn’t look atrocious single handedly taking on the press as a first year off his 2nd game coming off a redshirt after being out for a year with an acl tear and the only other “ball handler” being taine murray who tony spent two years not feeling comfortable enough to play at guard because of the lack of handles…
Of course, we all know Reece is running the show; it would be absurd for me to suggest otherwise. But if you watch, Reece communicates with Rohde a lot, looking for him to assist moving the ball through the offense.
I am by no means trying to diminish Taine…I doubt there is anyone on LRA who doesn’t look for a really good consistent role for Taine; I think he brings a lot to the team. He’s also a really good kid so far as I can tell; smart enough to take academics seriously and get accepted to the Comm School. I respect that.
I do think Taine has a role on this team though. And I think this 5 out/triangle might actually fit taine more. Instead of having to run off a screen and shoot he can be more set when he gets open in the corner to shoot.
And he has some downhil to his game that he flashes at times (The assist to Groves vs Texas A&M and corner 3 pump fake drive vs Syracuse a year ago come to mind)
Funny - 18% of his career points were vs Iowa when they were down big and came back.
I was referring to this year Dave.
I think maybe the most important thing to remember in this is that Andrew has played 8 games and has been apart of the program for approximately 6 months… Taine is in year 3. I give Taine all the credit in the world for being a guy who when his number is called he picks up and he competes.
Ok let’s see… he played 21 minutes vs Texas Southern and he checked into the game when the score was 7-7… after his first 4:30 of playing time the team was up 17-7.
Score was 35-23 when he came in the 2nd half.
The Hoos then went on a 24-5 run with him on the floor.
He played 23 minutes vs NC A&T.
They were up 12 when he checked in and were up by 20 after his first half 5:40 stint.
Okay Dave.
Just don’t know how anyone who watched the last two games can advocate Taine over Rohde in this offense lol the whole reason this offense works is because Rohde and McKneely can handle the ball. Taine actually makes more sense as a sub for Groves or Dunn to play with the Beekman, Rohde, McKneely trio if we continue with this outside triangle as our almost exclusive pattern
Wasn’t @Hooandtrue talking about scoring? Not general impact on the game or +/- ?
If so, Taine did check in for that run in the first half of Texas Southern but did not score. In the second half of that game, his only made basket came with 2:23 remaining.
Taine filling in that Fish role hitting the corner 3s, am I right?
