šŸˆ UVa Football Postseason '23-'24

Went back and lookedā€¦ Josey was going through the ringer, dunno how much Boley was hampered.

It was really fun in the COVID bowl season. I remember a few games that had lots of key guys announced out seemingly out of nowhere like an hour before the game.

Gotta mean Tyree. Huge pickup. Next year could be fun if we just get a few more big uglies

Is this thread or the College Football Transfer Portal thread supposed to be more UVA centric? Can we update the title of this to include Virginia?

Yeahā€¦ makes senseā€¦ Iā€™ll do it!

Nah, this the fun part of UVA football - just imagining how next yearā€™s team could totally be better and weā€™re totally going to make the leap cause the same team that got regularly obliterated this year could surely turn the corner with a little sweat over the summer and a transfer here or there. This is all imagination and dreams. Key is to tune out when football season actually starts.

I thought we already had a UVA Football transfer portal thread, and this was intended to discuss the Bowls / CFP nonsense.

Close the thread! Too confusing! I donā€™t even know what to post here, so this is what I went with.

You know, Iā€™ve always thought that Bronco left the program in better shape than when he found it, but speaking of the roster specifically, I donā€™t know anymore. If you look at the 19-20-21 recruiting classes, a lot of the higher rated guys havenā€™t made contributions in line with what you might expect from that level of recruit. The 2019 guys shouldā€™ve been 5th year seniors in 2023 for example. The 2019 class was supposedly Broncoā€™s strongest or 2nd strongest recruiting class. Ranked 39 on the 247 composite.

2019
Briggs - transferred after a year and change
Wicks - NFL draft after 4 years
Stewart - rotation player for 2 seasons, graduated and left team after 4 years
N Jackson - 3 year starter, All-ACC, transferred after 4 years
Smiley - part time starter last year, coming back for 6th year I think
Clary - starter when healthy, been injured a lot, I think coming back for a 6th year?
Milledge - transferred after 1st year
Hollins - rotation RB
Hubbard - transferred after 1st year
Perry - RIP my man :frowning:
Beal - never contributed
Ahern - part time rotation LB
Cypress - really good 1 season then transferred
Al Soufly - transferred after no contributions
Wentz - never contributed
Leech - part time rotation OL 1 season
Dixon - transferred
Chalmers - transferred, no contributions
Goddard - no contributions
Teeter - no contributions
M Williams - transferred after 1st year
Saitu - no contributions
Harvey - transferred after 1st year - was a pretty good RB for UCF or USF this year, forgot where he went.

2020 and 2021 were more if the same. We basically got strong performance from 2 guys, neither of whom spent a 5th year here.

Huh. That seems terrible.

Maybe we could phrase it ā€œBronco recruited about the right number of players for each role and didnā€™t have big, weird gaps in the roster the way London did. But player evaluation, development and retention might have been bad enough the last few seasons to generate the same resultā€?

Maybe Bronco and staff identified guys they hoped to develop, but they didnā€™t stick around long enough to see it through. Iā€™ll post 20 and 21 in a few.

Class of 20. Should be 5th year seniors in 2024. Most of these guys can play in 2025 too.

Horton - saw some STs time this season finally. Not on the 2 deep
B Williams - quit football
Gaines - rotation DB
Donovan Johnson - maybe played some STs this season? Not on the 2 deep
Lavel Davis - RIP my man
Su Agunloye - showed some potential before getting injured
Rawlings - 3rd string TE this season, maybe he makes the 2 deep next season
Armstead - transferred
Malani - transferred
J Carter - 4 year starter, coming back for 5th year
Brady - rotation LB? Honestly canā€™t remember seeing him much
J Johnson - part time OL starter for 1 season, transferred after 4 years
Herard - donā€™t recall seeing him much
Starling - fast guy, didnā€™t catch many balls, transferring

So youā€™ve got 1 season of Lavel and maybe an above average ACC player in Carter and maybe a couple guys break into the 2 deep in their 5th years.

Herard played a lot the back half of this season, albeit not particularly well.

2021 - Maybe Broncoā€™s best or 2nd best class. Ranked 33 in the 247 composite. 2023 was their 3rd year in the program so anyone thatā€™s halfway decent should be getting at least rotation playing time.

Bryce Carter - got some snaps
Logan Taylor - started 2nd season, transferred after 2 years
Josh McCarron - havenā€™t seen him at all
Jay Woolfolk - quit football
Noah Josey - 2 year starter so far, probably our best OL right now
Michael Green - kicked off team
Jacob Rodriguez - transferred after 1 season of being a FBP
Hugh Laughlin - maybe played a few snaps? I donā€™t remember
West Weeks - transferred after an inexplicable late hit on the punter in a VT game that we had under control until that point
Aiden Ryan - saw some time, has some potential, been hurt some I think
Jesiah Davis - I have no recollection of him
Javin Burke - I think heā€™s in the portal now?
Michael Diatta - saw some snaps at DL this season, some potential there
Ty Furnish - opened the past 2 seasons as starting C and lost his job both seasons
William Simkins - just entered portal
Jack Witmer - I think heā€™s seen a few snaps at OL
Lex Long - contributed past 2 seasons - in transfer portal now
Jonas Sanker - solid contributor for multiple seasons - All ACC
Micah Gaffney - sorry, I donā€™t know much about him
Amaad Foston - transferring after 3 years of no contributions
Malachi Fields - solid contributor. HM ACC. Leader of the WR room
James Jackson - starting LB this season and maybe part of last
Charlie Patterson - dunno
Lorenz Terry - dunno

Some real value in this class with Josey, Sanker and Fields. Jackson has been OK. Furnish may be OK after the move to RG, but a bit undersized. Long will be a loss. Taylor and Weeks were bad losses. Maybe a few of these guys grow into contributors the next 2 seasons. This is the first class that doesnā€™t have the Covid exemption.

Appreciate you taking the time to do this. That 2021 class definitely goes down as the best class from Bronco IMO. We also canā€™t gloss over the massive addition of Perkins and what it did for Bronco and the program.

But the biggest takeaway for me looking at those 3 classes is Bronco and staffs inability to develop players. Even of the guys who stuck around thereā€™s not many impact players on that list.

I think there was a lot of angst around the outlook of the 2023 season even before Bronco decided to leave the program. We were looking at quite the rebuild post-Brennan and that WR core graduating with a defense that had faltered for 2.5 years and seen little development, especially in the secondary.

I swear I donā€™t wanna rehash the ā€œWas Bronco a good coachā€ convo for the umpteenth time lol, but I do feel like there was at least some valid reason for people growing concerned about the direction the program was taking in his last two or so years here.
