UVA January Discussion Thread (and Happy New Year)

Didn’t love the Dunn DNP. I suppose I understand it, but we should’ve been playing the full rotation with a 20+ point lead. Then he could have played for a minute or two and then we’d have all been able to blame him for coughing up the 20 point lead. Instead, it’s a harder question…

As far as his offense**, I worry that it will probably be hidden under a bushel for most of the year because he can’t really efficiently do the stuff our offense needs, and our offense won’t be tailored to his skillset any time soon.

** whatever it might be right now, which is hard to know, since we won’t see it.

I agree from far. For a player in the rotation and atleast playing every game for some minutes getting a DNP when you are up “comfortably” can mess with you. Imma guess Jay Willy talked to him after the game and gave the old: Stay ready we need you talk

He’s like the wing version of Mamadi. Defensive potential is clear and obvious and he is more helpful on that side of the ball right away. Offensively, he shows glimpses of a lot of things but with lots of corresponding question marks. He plays with good energy and is a bit of a chaos agent. In 2016-17, Mamadi got 2 minutes in a February 23-pt win over VT, and then played 10+ mins in almost every game for the rest of the season.

Chase doing his best Kihei impression.

If that was legal, it would be pretty freaking awesome to see Kihei elbow dunk in a game.

Dunn might already be a better shooter than BVP…

Kihei has a 53in vertical no lift needed. Just the NCAA doesn’t want you to know about that.

We’re down two spots to 13 in the latest AP poll. Honestly didn’t fall as far as I thought we would, figured they’d push us back to at least 16th.

Baylor falls completely out of the top 25. Those Vegas wins are starting to look worse and worse the more the season progresses, unfortunately.

Yeah, Illinois seemed like a combustible mix that, at the time, seemed like they’d just have to figure it out, but kinda seems like they’ve combusted, but sometimes losing a guy can be clarifying for roles/rotations, etc., so let’s stay tuned.

Baylor has a dude, but he’s young and a bit inefficient, and they don’t have the same height and/or athleticism that they did the past two years on defense. Especially at the forwards (no Vital-- who was short, but was athletic, and a load; no Sochan; Everyday Jon still out).

Tangent – Shulman and Dickie V on the call tomorrow night.

I honestly think we may have faced the best version of Illinois that there’ll be this season. Maybe they turn a corner with the Skyy Clark fiasco behind them (rumor was that he was doing a number on their team chemistry) but the squad we played in Vegas looked pretty damn legit to my eye.

Baylor is sorely missing their big man Jonathan Tchamwa Tchatchoua who is out with an injury. Aside from him they have Thamba who is inconsistent offensively and a freshman who wasn’t expected to contribute this year as their frontcourt depth, and they’re getting torched in the post because of it.

Yup, Everyday Jon = JTT. I think I got that from Field of 68 guys. Not sure if anyone else uses it. Lohner seems a bit underwhelming, but also probably wasn’t expected to be a big contributor. And Bridges hasn’t looked great when I’ve watched.

Here it is:
“Tchamwa Tchatchoua has accomplished his dream, finding a place at Baylor after a short stint at UNLV where he has been christened “Everyday Jon” by his teammates. Tchamwa Tchatchoua earned the nickname due to his tremendous work ethic and spirit, which he attributes to his teammates around him.”

I completely forgot his nickname was Everyday Jon lol, that’s my bad. Bridges’ main problem is he’s been a non-threat from 3, shooting below 25% from deep on the year. He’s a solid player and good defender but they really needed him to stretch the floor more than he has.

Interesting, Joe Lunardi now has six teams from the ACC in his bracket—but Bass Tech is no longer one of them. We are the highest seed at 4, with Duke and Miami at 5

I like how Tony told him to take “the parking break off”. Seems Isaac has responded to that advice of late.

Question from a dummy: Is this a stickshift / manual transmission metaphor?

Bro you have to get out of Manhattan sometime.

I’m hoping it’s “automatic” :joy:

If you play with the parking brake on for too long you do major damage to the brake, and then when you try to stop playing you might still find yourself still dribbling slowly down the court…

Not if I have to drive I don’t :joy:
