UVA January Discussion Thread (and Happy New Year)

I wonder how many in the ACC?

Weren’t we a much better FT shooting team last year. Seems odd. Been and issue all year, and 11-19 last night. Could’ve put the game away much earlier

70% this year - ranked 211th
73% last year - 128th

Edit:
This year - Free throws made per game - 15.2 … 47th
Last year - Free throws made per game - 10.7 …293rd

74% from the line last year compared to 70% this year. Not massive but it is a considerable drop, Kihei is down about 7% and Gardner in particular has REALLY struggled.

I would think ā€œas a teamā€ 75% plus is respectable? Guards need to be nearer to 80 i think

Yeah … BVP and Gardner are killing the percentage - they are 55/89 = 62% and Caffaro is 6/12
The rest of the team is 167/225 = 74%

Only Reece and Sheds are north of 80% … in fact they are the only guys north of 75%

I took a look actually at FT% under Tony. The only year we’ve shot worse at the line under Tony was 2013-2014 where we shot 67%. And finished 1st in the ACC.

75% is probably the right mark. I think the issue this year is consistency. There are some really bad free throw shooting games (and then conversely some really good ones).

Either way, it seems like situationally we do struggle at the line more than anything. Could all just be bias though so no stats to back it.

If we’re taking 50% more FTs this year then it makes sense that the poor FT shooting would be viewed as more of a problem now, even if the % is roughly the same.

Yeah - I actually view as a little less of a problem … even hitting 1 FT helps dispel droughts…
We are 12th in the nation in free throw rate right now … and it gets the opponents in foul trouble and gets us closer to the bonus and can make the opponent more trepidatious.

Thanks yo

Stupid slightly off topic / question but figured I’d ask.

How does Kadin manage basketball and Comm School? Maybe my friends were just nerds but I recall that being a really tough course load.

Pretty impressive scholastic feat in my opinion. I got to think there’s some sort of article about it somewhere.

My perception is the really hard part was getting into comm school. After that point, uva has the incentive to pump you up as much as possible to get by GPA screens for banking, consulting recruiting

Lotta guys like me changed course of majors because of this. In my time Kenny Turner graduated from the Comm School. An rarity then for athletes especially basketball players

There is busy and then hard. I think the Comm School is busy/intense, which is different than giving out tons of C’s.

Think you answered some of it for me. Grade inflation for sure.

But I suspect most of the hard work / late nights I witnessed were more so competition against peers to separate for interviews, etc, Still limited spots for investment banking, Big 4 consulting, etc. All of which you would think Kadin isn’t as invested in - his post grad peers play bball.

Still tough gig.

Yeah, if you want to get a C at UVa, you either have to (1) try hard at not trying hard, or (2) find that random humanities prof who was taking the hard stand against grade inflation. ā€œGreat paper, Haney, on medieval history! Very well done! B minus!ā€

Making us feel dumb over here Haney. I got a few C’s my first couple of years but then figured shit out real quick.

Like avoid the maths and sciences taught by foreign PhD students at 8a. And just contribute / do the readings for the first month to earn yourself that coasting credibility. Above all get an in with the football team for which classes to take.
