UVA January Discussion Thread (and Happy New Year)

I thought Goodman was like Seth Davis…

Isn’t that showing the best lineup after Jan 1 is Reece, Kihei, Armaan, Dunn, and BVP?

Goodman’s a clown too. If he picks us #3, he’s still a clown, just like Seth.

That’s individual +/-.

So it doesn’t show how groupings perform.

But, no, if you were to take the top 5, would be Clark, Beekman, Franklin, Dunn and Shedrick. I’m not sure how much that lineup has actually played together though.

(Incidentally, I will say — and unsure whether it was by design or not — but Dunn was hitting the offensive glass from the wings on multiple shot attempts, along with whoever was on the blocks. That seems a departure from previous teams when anyone more than 17 feet from the rim retreated to play defense once a shot went up to cut down on transition baskets.)

Yeah. Specifically would like to see 1) since Reece got hurt to now, 2) since Reece got healthy again. I don’t think it’ll be bad but may not be as stellar as the full season since Shed played better early and what we ran benefitted him.

I love how the polls can get totally scrambled from week to week, as if the voters have no confidence at all in anything they thought they knew 7 days ago. (“Oh no, Top Team X lost a game, I must move them down several spots!”) Whereas the computer polls barely change at all at this point in the season. (“Top Team X lost a game? That’s not terribly surprising because statistics. Now that I have 21 data points on Team X, instead of the 20 I had a few days ago, I can fine-tune my prediction slightly.”)

I feel like back in the day rankings meant more. To your point(s)

The advanced metrics say we haven’t lost since shedrick saw his role reduced.

Only stat I need to see.

Also haven’t beaten a tournament team. I had to pay extra to Kenpom to figure that out

I’m just going to make a general statement, which is that I think most of us fans are absolutely terrible at assessing the defensive performance of bigs in our system. Too many things get blamed on bigs that are other players fault because our eyes can’t track everything happening in real time. And some things bigs should be blamed for they aren’t. Not that that is a helpful statement, but I do feel Shedrick gets picked on by fans on the defensive end for a number of breakdowns that aren’t actually his fault. I’d still say he’s actually one of probably the three best defenders on the team.

The reason he’s sitting is because he somehow forgot how to rebound (he was perfectly solid at it last year) and because offensively we’ve latched onto something else that’s working right for which he is not as well suited. But I continue to believe he’ll be an important piece. He does have to figure out the rebounding piece though - that is simply nonnegotiable for a guy his size playing his position who doesn’t have a super diverse offensive game.

Anyway, here’s his stats year over year for those interested:

Apologies for taking the bait - here’s my point: I like small ball and I like Kadin. We won’t get far in March without both working well. And I assume getting far in March is what we all want

Yeah, teams that do well in March have a Plan B when Plan A isn’t working.

Hmmm…isn’t that…what we’re doing?

Sorta an open question. Are we going with Plan B right now because the matchups work or have we just changed plan A

If Kadin starts playing again and we’re still winning, what will we stress about next?

Something I have thought about and we should keep in mind. The best team we have played with the small ball lineup is UNC without its starting frontcourt lol.

My opinion is we have completely chamged plan A

Saving Sheds for Filipowski.

What do we do for the next 35 minutes after Cedric fouls out?
