UVA January Discussion Thread (and Happy New Year)

Was it ever stated whether or not Traudt had fully recovered from the injury he sustained? Genuinely can’t remember and was wondering if that factored into why Tony said he’d have the RS on him for a month and then reevaluate things.

If there’s been anything said/written/otherwise about Traudt since the RS decision, I’ve missed it. Maybe that NIL thing re: diabetes was after that. But not sure.

I share this concern. We’ve done ok at best in the portal so far. No clear home runs but I’d have to say each of the 3 guys has been a net positive contributor to our record, despite some offsetting complications. I do think the extra year of eligibility has made planning the roster even more complicated, so I look forward to that being behind us. My reaction to the idea the staff is targeting an “athletic 4/5” was pretty tepid. I mean, yeah, we need that, but who are we getting that isn’t going to further impact traudt (and dunn and bond)? But the problem is the forward look on the roster construction has some gaping holes currently. specifically at the 5 and the 1. So we’re going to be in the portal. I just hope we narrow the focus to 2 types of guys primarily. 1) a guy with one year of eligibility who will come in and definitely start at a position of need. 2) a freshman who will have 3 years of eligibility remaining and, importantly can’t transfer again without sitting out (which I think evens out the value of 1 less year of eligibility vs a HS recruit who might bolt at any time).

If I understand you correctly, I think I came at it from the opposite direction. If this year’s team had a chance to be a Final 4 team, then I want to burn those redshirts and seize the opportunity with as many pieces as we can get. After Vegas I was wishing we had Traudt to enhance the possibility of a truly special year. But if this year was inevitably going to be something lower than that (as it seems now), then it doesn’t matter whether these guys are playing (for the sake of this year, that is; the arguments about development still apply).

Fair point. Yeah, I was coming at it differently. I get that all hands on deck approach, but I wasn’t really thinking about it that way.

You got the right guy

If you told me before the season a 3 seed was a legit possibility I would have smiled and thought the team was stealing something. Approaching the midway point of the season I’m still very satisfied with that projection.

More fun with efficiency stats, from Torvik:

  • Overall, no preseason adjustment - 21 overall / 21 offense / 53 defense
  • Until Nov 30 (after Michigan, before FSU) - 21 overall / 3 offense / 123 defense
  • Since Dec 1 (after Michigan, before FSU) - 35 overall / 102 offense / 23 defense

Too few games to draw sweeping conclusions, but basically seems like with a healthy Reece, and probably some favorable normal variation in 3-pt shooting, we had an awesome offense. But our defense is getting better, which seems to match the eye test of Reece not struggling as much on D.

If you’re inclined towards optimism (so not me), I guess you can convince yourself of a story whereby healthy Reece begets better O again, and 20-30ish D sticks around… Here’s hoping…

Meant to post this last night during the VT/Clemson game, but every time I see PJ Hall I wonder is that Traudt in 2 years, but Traudt has a slightly higher upside?

Or that’s Traudt right now.

Looks like our type of player. Did we recruit him?

Loved that guy and Tyson against us last year. Was hoping they were both off playing in Europe by now. The ACC got real tricky the past two week as play started back again hahah.

Its gonna be fun

Not sure, he was moderately recruited as I recall and came down to VT (Dad played for or with Mike Young I think) and Clemson (home school)

Hall is a great comp for Traudt. Obviously IT has a much higher upside but very similar games

Rumor is he chose Clemson because of his girlfriend. Good for us because it would’ve really sucked to see him at Tech

There’s also a rumor that Hall almost transferred here last offseason.

He also had a huge jump last year and was most improved player atleast in the ACC. Maybe he was Clemson caged beforehand

I think that rumor was contingent on Brownelll getting fired fyi

I’m not expecting traudt to be as athletic as hall, but hopefully a better shooter.

From all accounts Traudt played really well in the preseason. He did have a problem with fouling . I understand him wanting to get stronger but the best way to try to control your fouls is playing. He didn’t have to play much but it would have been some valuable experience. One more item is that i wanted this class to grow together. Traudt and Bond will most likely be behind Imac and Dunn. It would have been great to let them all get some valuable experience. I may be wrong but that part of the redshirting is what i don’t like .Hope they learn fast
