No - was talking about landing a talent like Eli, then saying he doesnât get minutes because he doesnât fit a mold
Oh. I was on record saying Cosby was a better fit and that Gertrude was really good but I questioned the fit since he wasnât a shooter or a pg and we tend to put the ball in the hands of our pgs a lot.
Just the way tony plays. I post the clips of Gertrude because he was someone we were pursuing hard and it was exciting to land someone staff prioritized. But in order to have the ball in your hands to make a play with Tony you need to be a pg.
I also of course pushed the Ja Morant comp cause Im super emotional LOL. But I think I grounded myself in a higher ceiling version of Darius Thompson, who also ended up fitting better in another scheme.
I disagree with this. Weâre currently watching Jake Groves make plays when heâs run off the 3-point line.
I was thinking moreso dribbling off the court and making plays with the ball in your hand a la taking your man iso or getting a screen.
The ball is in whoever the ball handlerâs hands are most of the possession. Especially in Mover blocker sets
But Elijah has never been a 1, a pure 2. Out of HS he was a SG. See 24/7; SI; etc. Tony didnât pursue him as a 1, so not sure about your take as him being a 1 back before we picked him up
Exactly. I had my head in the clouds about him being a pg (I remember @Galileo24 trying to convince me otherwise, that he wasnât close to being a pg) because I thought that would be the best way to get the most out of him, since the ball is usually in the hands of our lead guards. Without that, I dont see the fit currently or at the time/why I thought Cosby was a better fit as an off-guard for that spot (since we were still looking for a pg at the time).
But we will see if he can develop to fit that mold
Edit: LMAO that Milan Momcilovic take. I had to scroll through some really atrocious takes to find these blurbs⌠thanfully I have learned my lesson and will not regret anything I have posted in the last few months
I hope Eli doesnât transfer this year. I get it if he wants to leave after two years but he had to have known the first season was kind of a wash off the ACL injury? And next year there will be a Reece sized hole in guard minutes. Plenty of opportunities among the 3 guard spots
Elijah wonât play the point but he will probably have the ball in his hands more than any other shooting guard we ever had
Yeah it will be interesting to see. I think the consensus with Gertrude was that it was uncharted territory because at the end of the day there is no player comparison for Gertrude; Tonyâs never really had a player like that. Shows some characteristics similar to guys like Beekman and Darius Thompson.
As @AnonymooseHoo said, this season was kinda a wash/weird season. Coming off the red shirt and then two games we are in desperation mode. Woulda been preferrable to not redshirt him right off the bat and get more acclimated run.
Will be interesting to see how he both develops and how Tony adapts to fit his skillset into the schemes and get the most out of Gertrude. Could be a beautiful blossoming.
Some of us would
Love to see him have the chance⌠there is no evidence he wouldnât be better.
Both will have to give some . Maybe adjust is a better word
Without looking it up, who has played more minutes for their respective school?
- Davin Cosby
- Elijah Gertrude
Edit: Im not voting cause I looked it up and was intrigued by what I saw. Honor code: you vote first and then look it up
Answer: Elijah Gertrude with 111 minutes. Cosby has 106 with more games available/not coming off a redshirt burned few games into season
Clarification: no where close to being a point guard initially. Maybe in time that could change. I would defer to Fresh on that. In general, I think heâs been more effective on the floor as a player than I thought he would be at this stage and Iâd like to see him play more.
Not sure why youâd listen to me anyway.
Dave, you canât honestly tell me youâd like to see Taine play 30 minutes and expect me to ever take you seriously lol
When you define evidence narrowly, sure.
Getting a bunch of smart people who know a topic in a room to observe something and discuss and debate it and come to a conclusion. Thatâs a form of people wrestling with evidence. And itâs a good and valid one!
Looking at efficiency metric. Another form of evidence. Hopefully that big group looks at it and interprets it appropriately with the right caveats, alongside other forms of evidence, like expert observation.
So yeah look at the Taine metrics. But then watch him a lot. In practice. In games. Figure out why his metrics look so good. Use it as a clue of something, which may or may not be reflective of anything to do with him.
And as with every decision, there are tradeoffs often that you canât forecast with existing metrics (because they reflect the situation and context pre-change).
Anyway, I have a lot of thoughts on this. My whole job is building an evidence base. Itâs frustrating when people wield the term evidence inappropriately and narrowly.
If someone sucks at basketball and the metrics say they are really good - the conclusion might be that the metric is bad
Agree. Not a natural PG but can fill in. Not ideal for him to just play the point
The Taine advanced metric for me is usage â 12%!! Get out there and shoot it, train! ![]()
I didnât know it was mathematically possible but we are somehow trying to be a team where everyone can average less than 20% usage.
Would love to see Taine for 30 one game. Tell him you are playing all game and dont look at the bench worried about coming out
