Exactly. The models are basically forecasting what our chances if our next 6 weeks include 3 weeks of playing as the 240th best team and 3 weeks of playing as the 10th best team (roughly). Of course we wonāt make the tourney if that happens. But like you said, doubt the next six weeks will be a mirror of the last six.
If we beat ND, I think the Clemson game is almost house money. I think thatās likely our 2nd hardest game left. I have a feeling we will win in Blacksburg this year and also win @fsu.

The problem with Taine offensively is that heās enough of a vet to know that Tony wonāt punish guys for being members of the chicken shit club. Make a mistake? Pine time. Fail to try to make a play? No problem.

Iāll go ahead and agree wholeheartedly that there is an overall endogeneity problem in terms of assessing causality, not just for Taine but for all players on all teams (the analytics could be better, in my opinion, because a lot of confounders are available and could be modeled).
That said, I donāt see Taine turning down open 3-pointers, and heās not afraid to probe the lane. There are potentially some limitations on both ends, but playing within those limits, he doesnāt seem afraid to try to make a play.

His usage numbers suggest heās mostly uninvolved. Whether thatās a him problem or not, is of course open for debate
My view on the Taine/Rohde/Elijah (and sometimes Dante) PT debate: none of them are difference makers at this point in their career for extended periods of time (at least not in any good way), so why not cycle amongst them trying to find the hot hand, the good matchups, etc, and thereby develop in all of them what Tony likes most about Rohde (feel)

This is the best way to look at it. This schedule set up well for a group of players who hadnāt played a season togetherā¦ did we lose some bad games early (that I really didnāt think we would)? sure. But look at those gamesā¦ it wasnāt the same team playing that we have now. This year just took longer for them to figure it out, and really they still are working towards it.
This schedule set up well for a younger team finding their way, although the margin for error is smaller for a group that struggled early. Letās see how we stack up the next 2 weeks.

I get where you are coming from, but from Tonyās perspective he probably views Rohdeās vision as a difference maker. Or at least a skillset that stands out way more than what he sees in Taine and Gertrude. You can tell Gertrudeās handle is still a little shaky even if he can hit that midrange jumper; given how little room we have for error Tony sees that shaky handle and gets flashbacks to Memphis where we couldnāt even bring the ball up the court and were getting plucked at half court.
Limiting that shaky ball handling and playing Groves less/putting him less in hedging situations seems to be where we have curbed the being blownout potential (on top of Minor/Buchanan being trusted to guard one on one in the post).
I could see an argument for Taine getting more minutes when Rohde isnāt doing the thing that heās on the floor to do (like vs NC State where he wasnāt taking care of the ball at all. Yesterday there were some turnover but the game was already over and Rohde was actually shooting and hitting threes).
I want to see Gertrude over Dante but even with Danteās poor play he is still a stable dribbler. But his defense has been badddd off the ankle roll and he cannot hit anything. So idk. Gertrude will give you athleticism and midrange jumpers but also chaos in ball security and jumping at every pump fake which leads to everyone else rotating or compensating which leads to defensive breakdowns.

Here is a Trigger Warning: This tidbit came from todayās Duke Basketball Report (ACC Round UP). Sure, the writers are Duke fans but they have less bias than a lot of folks here; even more importantly, though, they value the ACC and have a lot of respect for CTB.

I said no quibbles, but I lied. Elijahās turnover rate is only slightly worse than Rohdeās. Thatās why thereās no logical defense of Tonyās PT decisions.
Thereās emotional answers: he must like something about Rohde that canāt be reduced to anything tangible (tbh, thatās my answer)
There are appeals to authority: āTony is a HOF coach, and youāre an idiot on the internet, Haneyā
Thereās the āblack boxā answer: itās practice and nobody here watches that, so thereās no way to know
But there are no logical answers that survive a quick review of stats, games, etc.

2019-2020 we gained momentum and never looked back. 2021-2022 we had that four game streak to give hope then regressed again.
I think weāre more talented than both teams. Obvious difference in experience though.
Weāre 4-0 in close games (ranked 11th) and ranked 338th in FT percentage. One of the worst teams at getting to the line so hasnāt burned us but feel like could determine our season at some point. Of all the silly things to worry about.

His passing is okay. His assist rate is fine, not spectacular. His defense is pretty good in some matchups, not others.
Again, Iām not saying bench Rohde, Iām saying that this debate is dumb. Heās not that good! Neither are Elijah or Taine or Dante. None of them are good at this point.
