Some of the rankings got messed up when I copied and pasted the info. Just look at the totals to see who’s where in the standings. The main thing is UVA women are kicking ass!
16 of the 18 women who made the NCAA team (max is 18 swimmers; UVa had women who qualified who were left home) have scored individual points. The two who haven’t swim their best events tomorrow. This is unprecedented in recent history.
Incredibly impressive dominance by the UVA women. Six NCAA championships in a row will be a record. Probably would be 7 but for the lost Covid year. Someone can correct me, but I think the current team has at least 4 swimmers with a great chance to make the next Olympics. Probably none quite at the world elite level of Gretchen and Douglas, but still remarkable.
Probably more than that. Curtis and Canny will make the Italian and South African Olympic teams. And Pudar on the Bosnian team
Curzan and Grimes have already made the US Olympics and Worlds team. Weber has made an Olympics team. Moesch is a rising star — she’s very fast on top of the water, which is very helpful in long course. Hayes has been on a Worlds team. Mintenko and Umstead are also rising stars — and Howley and Christopherson are LC specialists.
Lots of great performances. Curzan has moved to another level, Anna Moesch is staring down LA28 in at least the 200 Free, and Sara Curtis may break Gretchen’s 50 and 100 Free records before she’s done - while repping Italy in LA28, too.
Lots of work to do, but Curtis and Moesch will also push each other in practice. And Mintenko really showed something in that 400 Free relay, too.
The UVa men with their best finish in 15 years, 9th overall.
Maximus Williamson won two NCAA titles in the 200 Free and 200 IM.
Thomas Heilman got a top 5 in the 100 fly and finished second in the 200 fly.
David King finished third and Jack Aikins eighth in the 200 back.
Thomas Heilman and his brother Matthew were on a relay that finished in eighth — which is All-American. That’s a great story because the brothers lost their mother to cancer a few weeks ago.
The other great story was that Williamson and King tied for eighth in prelims in the 200 free. Ordinarily, there would be a swim-off for the A-final spot (lane 8). King gave up his spot and Williamson won gold.
