I think Iām in the minority here as far as projecting potential re iMac, but I always figured he would be an oscar winning supporting actor. Heās not the lead.
Then the GM should be fired. Wait, Tony is the GM? Interesting.
You canāt use lack of talent as an excuse for the coaching staff. Itās actually direct evidence that theyāre doing a poor job right now.
They did a great job in the past. Theyāre not doing a great job currently. Donāt get why thatās hard to understand.
Yes coaches won a Natty but they also couldnāt get out of the first round with like 3-4 NBA players on the team. You gotta scheme for the players you have, not the other way around.
They do have several guys who can hit an open 3 though.
Haha this is very true. But UVA players can hit open 3s. The issue is they canāt hit the step back 3 like RJ Davis.
Point stands tho⦠UVA is not devoid of talent.
OFF WITH THEIR HEADS! and give me their money because I can coach betterā¦
I guess the good news is we have 20 wins on the season and it feels like we are freaking Depaul or some shit right now. It can definitely get worse guys⦠Iāll take 20 wins with this group of randos (i.e. Minor, Groves, Rohde, Harris)
Letās allow for some nuance, and agree it is some of both?
Thatās a symptom of Tony bennettās systemā¦high floor teams. We take that for granted at times but also have every right to be very frustrated with the lack of ceiling weāve seen in recent years. Weāve avoided truly dreadful years record wise but watching your team get blown out 8 different times is rough.
Other college basketball fans: NIL and the Transfer Portal are ruining college basketball.
Me watching McKneely run off two baseline screens just to catch the pass one dribble and pass back to the top of the key: Yeah⦠thatās whatās ruining college basketball. NIL and the portalā¦
i especially loved it when Rohde just bull rushed the basketball from the logo with zero plan or thought, and jacked the ball to Groves on the baseline as he was flying into the photographers under the basket. Groves barely got a finger on it to save it soaring to the fourth row. Really great stuff.
This team is the reason my therapist is getting paid overtime this week.
Everybody is right and everybody is wrong. Tough night. We have to look at these guys in aggregate. If we can get 15 points from Elijah/Taine/Rohde in games that would be a win for us. Itās a complicated puzzle and I do t feel like we have pulled the right levers.
I will say Elijah shot eight free throws tonight. Rodhe has shot 14 this season. May have been mentioned already as I am just jumping back into to the LRA rugby scrum.
BC is a must win. We lose that and our argument gets much less believable. And they are better than they have been.
Bummed out but still optimistic. Go 2-3 the rest of the regular season and we will be okay. I think.
Talent is fine. Multiple top 75 guys, all conference transfers and a few NBA prospects. Scheme creativity is not. Itās coaching. We havenāt had to call it out often in the CTB era, but it is a flashing red light. Teams know exactly what we are going to run, what they need to stop, and trust we will not adjust. Do that, score more than 55, and itās a win.
Agree. But I think youāre understating the talent issues. Itās not just about top 75 guys. If you get a top 75 guys but your eval was horrible thatās a talent issue. Honestly tell me what ACC team would start Rohde? Groves is a career 7th man at best.
I donāt disagree with those particulars- I still think Rohde is essentially at RS freshman and needs S&T + time. I think most Acc teams (besides maybe unc/duke) would have him in a rotation. His confidence is just shot. Groves is completely solid in a 7 man rotation where you scheme specifically to his one elite skill.
I am not even close to an D1 offensive coach- but we should have an approach centered around the strengths of our 3 best players. Those are: 1) Reece creating downhill off of drives and P&R towards the hoop; 2) iMac off of solid pins, and quick decision action towards mid range ; 3) Dunn as a pure cutting/slashing option towards the hoop, where ball handling and any shots outside 3-5 feet are severely limited. Supplemental to this should be action that allows Minor to finish around the hoop off of rolls or quick seals, and Groves serving as a release valve to stretch the floor/open the paint. Other guys (Rohde, Gertrude, Murray, etc) are occasional matchup options.
I donāt see the simple B-M action accomplishing the best version of those strengths. Opening a game 3/22 (after a 14 pt first half the game prior) is an approach so broken, as HGN stated, it would warrant an immediate firing. That level of drastic change should 100% be on the table. This is still a team that can make a second weekend run.
Yes, the team has talent but itās too much one dimensional talent to form a solid TEAM. At some point to win high level basketball games you have to be able to scoreā¦Love UVA basketball and we have been spoiled with CTBās previous success⦠We shall see what the future holds but some changes will be necessary for UVA to get back to Elite status.
What is Rohdeās one elite skill? Honest question I donāt know.
Just curious about how you would verbalize tonightās events and what takeaways you have?
Coulda been worse if UNC was hitting. Our defense played well. Offense is embarrassing. Can someone convince Tony to hire an offensive coordinator in offseason? Also, tweak our recruiting specs.
