🏀 UVA vs UNC, Sat 24 Feb, 1600, ESPN

Hop over to the Gertrude thread @Jerome. @plegard and I put our thoughts there. He looked like he belonged, and brought some unique strengths, and he also has things he needs to tighten up, especially with off ball defense. Played with good verve I’d say.

He provided athleticism that others weren’t. He had some trouble staying with Ryan, in particular, off screens, but he wasn’t any worse than Rohde or McKneely on that.

He made some athletic plays on the defensive glass and got to the line — almost posterized a Heel.

4-8 from the line — yuck. But symptomatic of the team as a whole.

Provided a spark we needed when we went down 13 in the first half.

Thanks guys. If this means more run for Gertrude going forward then today was a win. No reason he shouldn’t get run on Wednesday which is now a must win.

She’s not the most blocked person on the site by at least 3x over.

If you remove Minor, UVA shot 22% from the field and 14% from three. It’s amazing that the game stayed as close as it was.

The numbers were that good?!? We started 3-24 as a team.

Crazy we were ever that close in light of the fact that we didn’t take advantage of Bacot sitting most of the first half with 2 fouls.

My wife and I had a great time at the game. I saw great effort out there, I got my wish to see Eli playing in person – a lot! – and Jordan Minor was a grown effing man. He had himself a game.

Worst part for me wasn’t even our offense, it was Cormac Ryan repeatedly hitting dagger threes (every one seemed to be at a critical moment). Deflated the building over and over. If not for that we might have won despite our absurd offensive ineptitude.

Questions for the folks on here (@DFresh11 @chavlicek15 and I’m sure many others) who know a lot more than this dude who retired from basketball after fifth grade and decided to focus on other sports.

  1. How do you get the team’s confidence back in shooting and I guess being more aggressive driving the paint or at least looking at the basket when they catch the ball on the perimeter?
  2. What adjustments need to be made to the offense to get the good shooters open looks? iMac has gone off in games but not at all recently. Probably ties back to the confidence question.

Tony finally has the lineup that can get us going again and moving forward. Im feeling more optimistic now. beeks, imac, gertrude, dunn, minor with groves 6th man. Buchanon comes in for minor. like to see Taine as the 8th man and Rhode 9th.

Minor was definitely a green shoot for me with his offensive production. He’s a more reliable roll threat that Blake right now and he does a good job of claiming space for offensive rebounds. Nice game for him to bounce back from a run of quiet games.

There are no future NBA players on this roster.
Start any 5 you want.
Start the 6-7 walk-on from Virginia Beach.
X’s and O’s can only take you so far: it takes talent to even just be a defensive specialist. Playing defense takes co-ordination: guarding someone tightly without hacking or getting called for blocking is a skill. Defense is not just “wanting it more” or “giving 100%.”

Virginia is in big trouble if Tony Bennett leaves. There are a lot of Dave Leitao-caliber coaches out there.
One thing I have noticed is that any time UVa really wants a basketball recruit, all Duke has to do is snap their fingers and he spends a few years in a Duke uniform instead. UVa has got to be able to recruit in the state of Virginia: I thought that building JPJ would take care of that, but it hasn’t. And Duke still plays in an arena that is so old and dumpy-looking that I can’t see why any high school player would want to play there.

Tony Bennett needs to hire an assistant who has experience with coaching a fast-paced offense. :innocent:

He looked pretty good, because he obviously has a lot of athletic talent.

My questions: Can he bring the ball up against a full-court press? Can he make free throws? Can he make 3-pointers?

This was the worst game I’ve seen Beekman play since he has been at UVa. Maybe he was sick. I know he’s had a lot ot trauma in his life. He can really get up, and he can shoot free throws. He also can turn the ball over a lot. He dominates the ball by dribbling too much. He doesn’t want to attempt 3-pointers, and I can see why. He actually seems to be a low-post scorer on offense. Maybe we should try to post him up. Are there any 6-2 centers in Division 1?

McNeely?..

I can believe how bad Rhode has been. People say that he should not be playing. Okay, I agree. We have a whole team full of players who are mediocre at best. Who should we start in place of Rhode? The guys on the bench are just as mediocre as Rhode is, in my opinion.

It is amazing that Tony Bennett won 11 ACC games with these guys.
