šŸ€ UVA vs UNC, Sat 24 Feb, 1600, ESPN

No he didn’t focus on them.

He talked about them. He also talked about how unsettled we were on offense throughout the game (UNC guarded really well, he said) and joked that we were on fire in the second half (28 pts!) when asked why we had a good offensive second half. And he mentioned the missed opportunities to get the game to one possession (McKneely three, Minor front-end miss).

It was as much about offense as defense on the radio version, which I assume is the same as the video. He also spent as much time praising the D for keeping us close.

Some folks hear what they want to hear.

Few positive things:

  1. Defense looked very good.

  2. Minor reemergence. Huge.

  3. We didn’t mentally collapse. Didn’t let offensive struggles make us lose focus on defensive end.

We need to hold onto these three things and try some new stuff schematically and personnel wise offensively.

A lot of positives / a lot of things that worked really well:

  • Reece played RJ to a (very ugly, inefficient) draw
  • Minor got the slight best of Bacot
  • Stifled a very good offense
  • corrected on Cormac in 2H and held him to 3
  • found some, slight offense in 2H

Oversimplification, but the difference in the game is UNC found one thing that worked really well (Cormac draining buckets against unathletic closeouts), and we found zero things on offense that worked well

Have a feeling the BC game could go similar to GT road game. Slow start, but maybe we start clicking at some point in 1st half and end up pulling away in the 2nd half.

At least I hope.

Separate topic - could not hear or understand a single word from the PA and scoreboard videos. The speakers are completely broken in JPJ and have been all season. Just unbelievable that Carla or someone in the ADs office continue to fail to fix the issue

What kept crossing my mind watching yesterday, other than the obvious, was how much I look forward to putting covid year super seniors behind us. It’s a disgrace that Armando Bacot is still playing college basketball. Nothing against him personally. And we have our own 5th years. But it’s just messed up. Of all the NCAA’s stupid moves in recent years, that was the most clearly boneheaded decision even at the time.

…at the same time we have portal and NIL instability. I hope Tony holds on. He has to have some expectation that he can build a team and keep them.

Feels like a perfect storm with the development of NIL too. I’m guessing more guys would have turned down the extra year if it was less competitive financially with starting a pro career.

As a Imac fan i have to say his offensive (all around)effort was lazy. He was kind of trotting around and not doing anything to free himself. On a team that struggles to score he really has to step up his effort. I go back to watching Guy who always mixed up his movements enough to be able to get off a shot and I believe it would help him to watch some of his games. He’s a marked man against everyone we play and he needs to adapt his game to that fact. Be a dawg!

He needs to watch tape of Guy over and over again. He isnt the exact same kind of player, but he is going to have to move better off the ball to reach his full potential here.

Yeah I watched him a few possessions on offense and defense only and it was rough man.

He had bad closeouts on defense and some breakdowns. He came around screens on offense and defense with a lack of intensity. I’m not sure what’s going on there.

Tony missed his true calling as a soccer coach where a 0-0 score with 10 minutes left is ok.

Photo I took back in November (women’s game). The sound system shut down entirely, the place felt like a high school gym for a few minutes, then they set up a couple of portable speakers in front of the band and made announcements from there for most of the game.

JPJ sound system is actually run by the social media team. @hoosno1

That explains why you always seem to hear someone going up and down steps in JPJ.

Can’t say I disagree on this. There’s a lot of standing around watching on offense. And it’s not just him a lot of the time… but yeah agree completely. Kyle was always doing 2 things: talking and moving. JMO but Isaac could score as much as Kyle if he played like him. Isaac range is a little deeper and he can hit off the pull up. Was really hoping he would take the step this year but I do believe he hits it next year.

I think TB made a comment postgame that they wanted more movement on offense this game. It did seem like they were trying to curl a lot towards the rim as its own action. They really needed more movement off ball once Reece poked his way into the paint off of a screen, he had no good options even after getting into the middle of the defense.

Yep. Reece can get in there at will seemingly against anyone. Let’s use that! Create a bit of chaos off ball as he’s getting in the lane and see what we can generate.

I do think Reece getting in there is a little more ad libbed so we’d need guys to make reads based on where they are and who is around them. Hard to design plays when someone is riffing but we can certainly try more than what we have been in that situation.

I had heard that IMac was dinged up this week spending a lot of time on the trainers table… that jibes with how slow he has looked lately.
But it doesn’t work to play him a mostly useless 35 minutes - why not play Taine more who was healthy?

Interesting. That seems to track with what some of us observed.

I wondered why Taine came out for Elijah in the first half. (I’m glad Elijah got run, mostly wondering if/why Taine’s leash was short or what he did).
