Yeah, agree. Feels like it was showing up already but it was being masked by other good things for the most part
Rohde also not being a 2ndary initiator is also a strong whiff at the moment. I still like Rohde a lot and think he will be realy good for us. But heās more Joe Harris/Devon Hall than Jerome and canāt really attack the rim yet/still adjusting.
Groves streaky shooter. Dante not really being a fit for us playstyle wise unless we choose to push the ball more to make up for lack of initators in the half court.
Really emphasizes how important it is to land high school talent. And we have but they are just young/developing. Once we ween off these transfers we will be better.
Neither iMac or Rohde being a secondary ballhandler/playmaker is a big problem. Clearly why CTB is giving Harris/Beekman pairing so many mins. Sorry to rehash but ready or not Gertrude needs mins this year
McKneely and Rohde are going to have to figure things out against defenses that pressure the ball handler. Either have to learn to create off the dribble or get space off screens. Good thing is that itās a learnable skill. Devon Hall and Armaan come to mind as guys who greatly improved
I want to revisit this in February. He has shown flashes. He had a play early second half on the right wing where he had a slick behind the back/through the legs dribble, and whipped the pass to Reece at the top for 3.
I think he needs more confidence and moments for the light to fully get there. But I think it will this year.
The last 10 minute quit was the big thing. Well, one big thing. Shouldāve been an 8-10 point game. But was a blowout.
Fwiw this isnāt a Tennessee game. We donāt have a 2013-2014 team here in terms of balance. I hope we lock in mentally because we can be a really good team.
Playmaking and interior defense. Hope we turn a corner.
Reece needs to drive over to Tonyās Hotel room
Bingo. Him being the coaches kid is almost too onbrand
Yep 100%. I also think coaches can help them in this regard. Run some stuff that will build up their confidence.
iMac was definitely a step slow. As was Dunn after he went down. It factored in for sure.
That works, just show up in the days between. I enjoy your insights.
That wasnāt the problem
Down 5, Crowe goes 1 x 1 vs. Buchanan and beats him for 2.
Down 7, Buchanan has a potential dunk swatted by Crowe.
Down 7, Crowe goes 1 x 1 vs. Buchanan and misses but draws Dunn to him, Gilmore dunks the rebound.
Down 9, Buchanan goes 1 x 1 vs. Crowe and Crowe gets a piece of the layup attempt.
Down 9, Blackwell draws foul by Dunn in the lane, drains two FTs
Down 11, Rohdeās 3-point attempt gets blocked by Crowe, TV Teddyās sucks ass.
Down 11, Hepburn uses a high ball screen to nail an uncontested three at the top of the key.
I canāt remember if Harris was in, but that pairing had nothing to do with the run. We got good looks that we didnāt finish, and Crowe ate up Buchanan.
IMac can at least make shots running off a screen. I donāt remember Rohde making a shot all season that wasnāt a wide-open, set 3 pointer. I feel like the preseason expectations are usually set correctly, but I donāt understand where all the Rohde hype was coming from. It was apparent after game 1 that he canāt create his own shot. Still a fine player though as a true Sophomore
That run pretty killed the game Crowe took over and ābrokeā Blake at the same time.
Yep and this is why TB shouldnāt automatically relegate someone to redshirt status when that player could very well develop over the next couple of months overtaking one of our missed evaluations.
Things I noticed tonightā¦
Blake is a freshman, completely outclassed today on both ends by Crowl
Wisconsinās defense was really good, but Reece is mostly on his own on offense. Whenever someone else tries to create, Iām holding my breath.
I donāt know if there is an answer to our current rebounding issues, people are counting on Minor, but he hasnāt done much better on the defense end than anyone else weāve put out there.
If we are going to give up that many O boards, the only chance we have to even the shot volume is to create turnovers, and Wisconsin did a great job of spacing and making their passes easy passes that are hard to create turnovers off of. We were able to do that against Florida, but not tonight.
Guys freelancing is tough way to go. Is there an alternative offense Tony can run? When weāre clanking outside shots and the interior is packed, what sort of offensive schemes could we do?
Yea donāt think heās going to make his own shot much this year. But he can learn to get more separation off screens. Same for Isaac. Ankle mightāve contributed tonight but he also wasnāt creating space against Florida. Those two need to be getting off a combined 7-9 3 pointers per game and only attempted 4 tonight
The Rohde hype came from his film. In his film heās doing the things youāre seeing McKneely do. For some reason - likely lack of comfort and just general tentativeness - heās not doing the things he did at St Thomas like attack his shot off screens and take his guy off the dribble. Heās never going to be a plus athlete but heās crafty enough and has the size to absolutely get his shot off consistently.
Obviously itās much better competition but he needs to hunt his shot. Heās playing passive to a fault and Iād like to see him be WAY more aggressive
I was very optimistic on Groves but Iām starting to get very strong BVP vibes and as @Hooandtrue said he seems to be a very streaky shooter. And a defensive liability. Sigh.
Iāll also personally take the blame (kidding mostly) that I didnāt attend this yearās Thanksgiving week tournament. Went to the last two and the team went 4-0.
The elder whites beating up on the younger Idaho whites. Tough 4 Blake. Spider-Man meme vibes.
