UVA vs Wisconsin (Ft Myers) Monday 11/20 6pm EST FS1

Taine slashing to the hoop is a Leeroy Jenkins move.

I’m becoming less convinced that the ā€œeat the cake yearā€ is coming, meaning a legit top 5ish, final four caliber type of team. I actually think this years team will be better than next year (assuming we lose Dunn after this season), but the portal can change things in a hurry. Regardless, I’ll be generally happy as long as we keep making the tournament and it seems like we’re set to do that for the foreseeable future

Thank you for saying so. I have no intention of taking a victory lap. I’m as bummed about last night as anybody. I don’t think all is lost, but we have some work to do.

I agree that some of the commentary around players and schemes can become tiresome, especially from a certain subset of folks that really seem to think they know better than Tony. But it has a place here. IMO, as long as a someone’s view or argument is well reasoned, it should be welcomed. This is where we come to discuss UVA basketball. And discussion should include debate, not just agreement.

Clone 5 Dragon’s and let them run wild

We wont win much but i guarantee anyone looking like the wisc coaches kid gets punched. There’s 5 Dragons one can take a tech for the team.

Not shocked by that line for Harris - when he was in, he looked out of control with the ball and did nothing to get other players engaged. Not leading last night.

Does FS1 or Fox Sports have an app for a rewatch, like ESPn? Not sure if I want to, or will have time, but just in case… I know there is always HooTV…

The ball was consistently stopping when Dante was in the game (almost always with Dante). We had no offensive flow and he was unable to penetrate to get in the lane to dish.

Crazy stat:

Starters were 14-33 (42%) from field and 4-8 from 3.

Bench was 1-13 from field and 0-5 from 3.

(Going to lose it if Groves keeps pump faking semi open 3s for contested midrange post up).

Felt like if a couple of those threes go in early it’s a closer game (obviously) but we keep it close throughout. Instead, Wiscy punched us back after we cut it to 5 and we unraveled. Not surprising for a young team.

I know a blowout is bad from a metrics standpoint but some valuable lessons in humility and focus can hopefully come from this. We rolled over and that can’t happen

I couldn’t find it on the app.

This’ll show you everything you need to but don’t want to see:

The thing is even with our struggles we cut it to 35-40 but then they went right at buchanan. And then when we helped buchanan they just rotated the ball.

As @HoozGotNext alluded to, there was a mental collapse there as well.

Here’s a longer version of the highlights:

11 minute stretch to start the game with 7 points. a 25 points per game pace
13 minute stretch to end the game with 6 points - an 18 points per game pace
16 minutes in the middle with 28 points
a 70 points per game pace.
Do we do anything differently in the middle section other than make more shots? Was the shot quality better?

Here’s the thing - as a tennis player. If I know a player’s weakness is his backhand volley and he suddenly makes 2 or 3 in a row in the middle of a match… I have to stay disciplined enough to keep making him earn over and over again. The post double failed to make them earn by hitting tough singles. If I’m Reece I’m getting everyone in the huddle and saying no more doubles and play as tough as you can in there and everyone rebound the first miss … and then act like you wanna score every time you touch the ball on offense. The opponent has to believe you might score on them for them to be stressed and stretched.
Gotta force their big guy to go get 25 by himself with zero assists or hockey assists.

basically my opinion in a quick summary

Yeah, I mean when the other team knows a post double is easily defeated and it basically equals 3 points every time they see it … call it off and just tell dudes to get stops or get out. Crowl would have still abused Blake at a high rate but the expected value is probably less than the momentum juicing 3 that was happening out of every trap.

Wisconsin to their credit played the post double very well. Obviously practiced but they not only passed out of it, but made the extra pass on the perimeter when needed.

The high hedge I think hurt even more defensively. They pulled Dunn out of key and basically forced a recovering Blake or Groves to counter the 7 footer. We need a better answer to it.

Wonder what a zone would do to an opponent who is so obviously well prepared and scripted vs. our pack line? Just as a change up. 3-4 defensive possessions per half type of thing to stop momentum and allow our inexperienced bigs to play more effectively.
