UVA vs Wisconsin (Ft Myers) Monday 11/20 6pm EST FS1

But there’s a tension there in his two ideas : work in progress and out of ideas. We looked more “out of ideas” than “work in progress” which was a bummer.

There’s lots of things this team could do offensively, but why didn’t we try them?

I’m staying tuned tho…

I dont agree with your take here. We returned only Reece as a veteran presence, McKneely and Dunn had to step into bigger roles and we added 8 new bodies. Definitely a work in progress winning out. We tried some other things but we dont have the chemistry or cohesion or experience to really execute at this time with the current roster because of the above.

Wisconsin was a team that returned most everyone and added aj storr.

At the end of the day we got bitch slapped made a slight run then they delivered a knockout punch
We had zero answers.
Let’s have shirt burning party of the red kind

I don’t know, I was pretty bummed about that game last night, but now, in the sober light of a new day… I’m pretty bummed about that game. We really got our asses handed to us.

I understand joy comes in the morning, but like, what time

Joy comes in the morning but like is it always next morning? Or like a morning like a year from now?

Still waiting on this joy you talk about

The team was out of answers because they’re a work in progress.

If they’d been together for 3 years they’d have had a lot more tricks up their sleeves.

I find myself in a common message board spot here where I agree with everything you say, but you’ve said you disagree with me, and I’m not sure what I’ve said that you disagree with.

I’m not saying we are a finished product. I’m saying that it basically looks like we have not even identified what product we want to make, never mind started working on it (offensively, I mean). So, saying we are a work in progress is giving us too much credit…

Looking at the box score: Reece’s statline is actually really good. 17 pts, 7 assists to 2 turnovers, 2-3 from 3 pt land. 4 rebounds 2 steals.

Ryan Dun 3-6 from the field, 5 blocks 2 steals

Dante -21 in his 17 minutes. Not the scape goat but more data for the “Reece and Dante shouldn’t play together” crowd. Which I am a part of.

Joy comes in a morning. I mean, that makes more sense. There isn’t one morning. Its not the morning and then there aren’t any more.

In honor of having had a dr appt this morning, I’m going to prescribe the board 6 weeks of watching Cuts videos and overanalyzing minutia and then complaining on the boards if symptoms don’t improve.

I dont agree with the latter sentiment. Just not the way I see it. I dont think we are out of ideas. I think we have ideas that we can execute better once this team has acclimated to each other more.

I think they have an idea of what they want to do offensively now and what they want to add on later. We may just see the dough, but Im pretty sure staff have a vision for what they want to bake out of it.

Yeah, think this is just vibes, which is fine. When I say out of ideas, I mean stuff like, well they’re shutting off our water in sides so we should … have iMac make one dribble moves into contested long mid-range shots? Have Groves make contested drives to the hoop? (Which to be clear - I’m glad someone wanted to do that - but maybe it shouldn’t be him)

Like I don’t think that’s the plan …

Surprised we couldn’t find looks for Bond since they were covering up the 3 ball.

We have no threat of a traditional post game which makes it far easier for the other team to run our guards off the 3pt line and pressure them high. Why I would really like to see more of Bond, to give him iso opportunities against smaller or similar sized wings. Same for Groves and Rohde. Need to present that threat to occasionally have help collapse down to give our shooters open looks. I was shocked we didnt see that with Bond last night even if his defender was going to be bigger. You telling me Bond cant take Wahl from the elbow???

Question is what are the other options when resting McKneely or Rohde?

  1. Play Taine

  2. Play Dunn or Bond at the 3

  3. Burn either Gertrude or Bliss’s shirt

Which one do we see Tony realistically trying? Would think Taine getting an opportunity Wednesday is the most likely scenario

You definitely took lumps post UF. Somehow, both militant optimists and militant pessimists alike seem to have collective amnesia about what the early sentiment (meaning springtime, not during the Fall lead-up) was for this team. A couple of folks have tried to remind us, but this was expected to be a growth year. Then we got some positive early developments (flashes is probably more appropriate) and the expectation goalposts moved. Perhaps a few didn’t move their priors, but as a whole the board did.

Our system has some requirements that “just roll the ball out and go” teams don’t. It is challenged differently by Covid eligibility, new transfer rules, NIL etc that other teams aren’t. Adjusting takes time and the results have been mixed. I expect they’ll continue to be, but I don’t think anything that’s happened since the end of last season puts us behind the original timeline.

2023-4 was (and probably still is) a lick the beaters year and not an eat the cake year. We’ve been getting the recruiting piece together. The development takes time. I have confidence we’ll get there, but this is what a dev year looks like.

More directly to the comment, militant optimism (which I’m admittedly closer to than militant pessimism) sees a UF win and says “let me lick the beaters and be happy for a minute.” Honestly, it can be hard to find joy in the process when some posters talk about how shitty player X is or how bad our schemes are. You did neither of those, but others frequently do. We all process differently.

Sorry you got shouted down for your take. It was defensible, accurate, etc. For optimists, it was shit timing though.

For the record, and not to implicate anyone in any misdeeds or leave anyone out purposefully, I love almost all posts from @haney, @Jerome , and you as well. The board is better for having varied viewpoints.

Now if only we could all communicate those (again not pointing at the three I just mentioned) without assuming the opposing side is naive or malicious, we’d be on to something.

Taine also isn’t afraid to slash to the hoop when he gets an angle, which is something Isaac and Rohde are lacking at the moment. I still don’t expect him to be a factor but he does bring something different

He had a nice slash last night and didn’t convert, naturally. It did look good though and I was happy to see it.

To revisit the work in progress / out of ideas thing.

We were out of ideas in the one game. Are we out of them across multiple games? That’s the question and will tell us more about this work in progress label. If we see us try some new wrinkles and play tough the next two weeks, I’ll feel better.

The word is out on us now. Wisconsin showed the playbook about how to beat us. So we will see more of it in weeks to come.
